Madonna taken to hospital after being found unresponsive, treated for ‘serious bacterial infection’
Madonna, 64, had been “strenuously rehearsing” for her upcoming tour before she was rushed to the intensive care unit.
Madonna is being treated in a New York City hospital after being found unresponsive and rushed to intensive care, it’s been reported.
According to Page Six, the Material Girl singer, 64, had to be intubated for at least one night in the intensive care unit after being rushed to hospital on Saturday.
She is reportedly now out of the ICU and alert and recovering, with her daughter, Lourdes Leon, by her side.
An insider has told Page Six that Madonna had been “putting in 12-hour days” rehearsing for her massive upcoming world tour, which was due to start in just a couple of weeks.
“She was strenuously rehearsing and putting in the work,” they said.
Madonna’s social media presence can attest to that: She’s used her Instagram account in recent months to show fans snippets of her life, hard at work rehearsing for the mammoth greatest hits show.
Madonna’s longtime manager, Guy Oseary, provided details of the ordeal on Instagram today, writing that she had “developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several day stay in the ICU.
He added: “She is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.”
Oseary also announced that all Madonna’s current commitments, including her highly-anticipated world tour, have been “paused” amid the medical emergency.
“We will share more details with you as soon as we have them,” he wrote.
Another insider told Page Six that Madonna “doesn’t want to cancel her tour. She was having a blast in rehearsals and wants to get back to it when she’s ready.”
Madonna’s last Instagram post before the medical emergency was shared on June 21 - a collection of behind-the-scenes snaps of the star busy in rehearsal for her world tour. “Calm before the storm...” she captioned the post.
Madonna announced the 35-date worldwide greatest hits tour at the beginning of the year, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of her breakout single, Holiday.
The 84-date “Celebration” tour was expected to kick off on July 15 in Vancouver before heading to the US and then Europe, finishing up in Amsterdam on December 1.
When announcing the tour back in January, she told fans: “I am excited to explore as many songs as possible in hopes to give my fans the show they have been waiting for.”
Madonna’s last tour ran from September 2019 to March 2020, in support of her album Madame X. The star had to cancel more than a dozen shows of that tour, telling fans she was in “indescribable” pain caused by an injury.
