MADONNA landed in hot water on Friday for posting a photo of her son on Instagram using the N-word.

The photo of her 13-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie, was accompanied with the hashtag "#disni**a," the New York Post reports.

Madonna must have realised it was a bad move for a 55-year-old mom. Moments later, she yanked it.

But she also knocked critics who thought the posting was inappropriate and racist.

"Ok, let me start this again. #get off my d–k haters!"

However in a statement on Saturday she was contrite, saying: "Forgive me."

Madonna said she was not a racist and she did not mean to use the word as a slur but knew there was no way to defend its use. She said she used it as a term of endearment.

She said she apologised if it gave the wrong impression.

Besides Rocco, Madonna has three other children, including two black children adopted from the African nation Malawi.

Madonna’s prior shock-provoking gestures include lip locking with Britney Spears at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.
