Lady Gaga has hit back at a nasty Facebook group set up by her former college classmates.

The singer has known about the group for years now, ever since she was a student at New York University, enrolled under her real name Stefani Germanotta.

But it was only this Wednesday that the star weighed in on the group titled “Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous”, which appeared to mock her dreams of becoming a singing sensation.

Upon seeing a TikTok post featuring two photos – the first was a screenshot of the Facebook group, and the second was of the singer at the 2019 Oscars overlayed with a list of her achievements – Gaga couldn’t help but address the hate she received all those years ago.

“Some people I went to college [with] made this way back when,” she commented on the post. “This is why you can’t give up when people doubt you or put you down – gotta keep going.”

In 2016, well after Gaga hit the big time, a former classmate Lauren Bohn took to her personal Facebook profile to praise the star for standing up to her bullies and never losing faith.

“I remember coming across a Facebook group that broke my heart. Its name: ‘Stefani Germanotta, you will never be famous,’” Lauren wrote in a lengthy post at the time.

Lauren said the Facebook group, which has since been deleted, ridiculed Gaga’s aspirations, with comments such as “attention-wh**e” and “Who does she think she is?” littered on the page.

“I also remember one dude posting a flyer for one of her upcoming gigs at a local village bar. He had clearly stomped on the flyer, an outline of his muddy [sole] struggling to eclipse her name,” Lauren shared.

“Stefani, thank you. Thank you for always thinking you’re a superstar, for using your cracks to let the light come out more brightly. Humans, let’s follow suit.”

Gaga enrolled in NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts when she was just 17 and lived on campus. She was among only 20 students to receive early admission into the prestigious program, but she only stayed for one year before leaving in 2005 when her music career began to take off.

Gaga soon made a name for herself thanks to various performances at clubs all around Manhattan, eventually taking on her stage name Lady Gaga, inspired by the Queen song Radio Ga Ga.

Three years after leaving NYU, she burst onto the music scene with her debut album The Fame, which featured her Just Dance, Poker Face and Paparazzi.

In 2019, Gaga would go on to win Best Original Song for Shallow which featured on A Star Is Born, a film she also starred in.

In her acceptance speech, she reflected on the hardships she had overcome in her career, while also encouraging others to never give up.

“If you are at home, and you’re sitting on your couch, and you’re watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work,” she said on stage. “I’ve worked hard for a long time, and it’s not about, you know…it’s not about winning. But what it’s about is not giving up.”

“If you have a dream, fight for it. There’s a discipline for passion. And it’s not about how many times you get rejected, or you fall, or you’re beaten up. It’s about how many times you stand up and are brave, and you keep on going.”
