“Last time we spoke you had the flights booked to come home to Australia … now something has happened, hasn’t it?” Hughsey asked her while on his radio show Hughsey and Ed.

“Wednesday morning I woke up early, Peter was already awake, doom scrolling, and he says to me ‘Do you want the good news or the bad news?’”

Asking for the bad news first, Peter, her husband, told her their flights had been cancelled “because Melbourne hasn't announced that it is open to returning visitors”.

The family were planning on flying direct to Melbourne to do their mandatory two-week quarantine.

Unfortunately, the flights were cancelled all through to December, meaning they are probably stuck in Italy for Christmas.

“I went ‘Okay, what’s the good news?’ and he said, ‘Oh I shouldn’t have said that … there isn’t any.’”

“Then overnight we have woken up to news that Melbourne is opening up to returning passengers on December 7th.

“160 people a day.”

Ed Kavalee pointed out that isn’t even one full flight.

“Now we’re in the mad scrabble … we lost our flight so now we have to go back into the queue. The only thing we can hope for is that there are not many Australian’s leaving from Bologna … but we might have to go to Milan.

“Yesterday we got a message saying you can’t travel together the six of you but we can probably get you three people on a flight, if you’re ready to leave tomorrow.”

This meant that they would have to split their family, and be ready instantaneously.

Langbroek admitted that they will split up and go separately.

“There’s complicated routes like coming back via Auckland and do your quarantine in Auckland and then fly into Brisbane … the whole thing is a mess!”

Earlier this year, the radio host told The Project that she regrets deciding to stay in Italy with her family throughout the pandemi c.

“Obviously you are following Australia and how we’re doing, we’re kind of smashing it to be honest,” Helliar began.

“Are you looking at us going, ‘Maybe we should have returned earlier … Why didn’t we get out?’,” he posed, to which Langbroek immediately exclaimed: “What do you think, Helliar?!”

“You are one of the people on the lifeboat on the Titanic yelling out at the band as the boat goes down, ‘Do you wish you were in here, mate?’,” she joked.

“Thanks for the comfort!”
