Jack Nicholson once called Cher ‘too old, not sexy’

THE singer has revealed the cruel comments her Witches of Eastwick co-star had said that brought her to tears.

SHE’S a living legend of stage and screen and recently cemented her star status for the umpteenth time with a scene-stealing role in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

But despite proving one of the world’s most popular performers, Cher claims she was once considered “too old” and “not sexy” by none other than Jack Nicholson and Australian director George Miller.

The 72-year-old recounted the surprise anecdote while performing two sold-out shows in Atlantic City last week, The Hollywood Reporter revealed.

According to Cher, the alleged incident occurred shortly after she celebrated her 40th in 1986 — a milestone she had been “dreading” but ended up feeling “fantastic” about thanks to a great birthday party.

“So I went to sleep, dreaming these fabulous thoughts of being 40 and it was good,” she said. “And I was going to get all these movies and I was just so happy.”

But the singer’s mood was soured when she received an unexpected phone call from Miller, who was directing an upcoming movie she hoped to score a role in.

“And in the morning, my telephone rang and the man said, ‘Hi, Cher, it’s George Miller.’ I said, ‘Hey, George.’ He was the director of Witches of Eastwick. So he said, ‘I just wanted to call and tell you that I don’t want you in my movie and Jack Nicholson and I think you’re too old and you’re not sexy.’ Good morning, 40!” Cher claimed.

The unexpected rebuff left her in tears and “heartbroken”, with Cher claiming that Miller had stayed on the phone and continued to insult her.

“He didn’t want to hang up. He just wanted to tell me everything: ‘I hate the way you walk, I hate the way you talk, I don’t like the colour of your hair, I don’t like your eyes,” she said.

Despite being upset, Miller’s relentless comments caused Cher to eventually snap and fire back.

“So, finally I was like, ‘OK, look motherf***er,’ yeah, I said the whole thing. I said, ‘You didn’t find me under a rock. I was nominated for an Academy Award for Silkwood. And I got the Cannes Film Festival award for best actress for Mask, so, goodbye!’”

Cher’s response seemed to change Miller’s mind and she was later cast in Witches of Eastwick alongside Nicholson.

While neither Miller or Nicholson have responded to her claims Cher appears to have had the last laugh, remaining in-demand as both an actress and singer for the next 30 years.

During her Atlantic City performances Cher also revealed that she can still hold a plank for five minutes — something we’re not so sure Nicholson, 81, and Miller, 73, could do.
