GEORGE Clooney has had a fair few ladies on his arm since his divorce 20 years ago, but not one of them has managed to get him down the aisle - until now.

Amal Alamuddin will now be known as the woman who tamed Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor after the pair’s engagement was confirmed by Clooney’s parents, and Alamuddin’s legal firm in a statement.

Clooney, 52, married actress Talia Balsam in 1989 and divorced four years later when he famously pledged never to marry again.

As early as December last year, Clooney told Esquire magazine: “I haven’t had aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn’t very good at it. I was quoted as saying I’ll never get married again pretty much right after I got divorced and then I’ve never talked about it since.”

But it seems there’s something about Amal Alamuddin that’s made him change his mind after just seven months of dating.

Here are 10 things you need to know about Clooney’s bride-to-be:

* 36-year-old Alamuddin was born to a wealthy and distinguished Lebanese family in Beirut.

* She graduated from Oxford University and New York University’s School of Law and was invited to become a barrister in 2010.

* She now works for the Doughty Street firm in England and specialises in international law, human rights, extradition, and criminal law.

* She is the legal adviser to the King of Bahrain and was once an adviser to former UN Secretary general Kofi Annan.

* Among her high profile clients is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange who she represented in his fight against extradition to Sweden after being accused of sex offences.

* She was named London’s hottest barrister by a hit UK legal blog which described her as “both breathtakingly beautiful and formidably successful.”

* Nobody’s confirmed how the pair met. Amal reportedly declined Clooney’s request for dinner twice, before accepting the third time in a “treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen” type approach.

* She is fluent in three languages - English, French and Arabic

* Her Twitter account - before being deleted - had 1800 followers, with Ashton Kutcher among them

* Alamuddin’s mother, Baria Alamuddin, is an award-winning journalist whose looks have drawn comparisons to Liz Taylor. She is the foreign editor of the Lebanese newspaper Al Hayat and makes regular appearances as a Middle Eastern correspondent on major US and British news channels.

And while for some, it’s difficult to wrap your head around the idea of Clooney settling down, those close to him say it makes sense that he would do so with a woman who shares his passion for crusading for human rights.
