Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn goes viral: ‘What an idiot!’

Joe Alwyn, the actor who dated Taylor Swift for six years before their break-up last year, has found himself back in the spotlight he tried to flee.

The British actor whose six-year relationship with Taylor Swift reportedly ended last year because of his desire for a low-key life has been dragged back into the spotlight.

Joe Alwyn is being compared to anyone who sold Apple stock in the early 2000s as Swift becomes “indisputably the biggest phenomenon in entertainment history”, according to Piers Morgan.

A viral tweet by Pop Base announcing the end of Swift and Alwyn’s relationship in April last year is enjoying a second life in the wake of Monday’s Super Bowl — where Swift’s new man Travis Kelce claimed his third NFL championship while she watched on with adoring eyes.

And the new comments make tough reading for Alwyn.

“Dude fumbled her and she immediately went on the greatest heater we’ve maybe ever seen,” one fan wrote.

“Most successful world tour of all time, Time Person of the Year, became a billionaire, broke a Grammy record and her new boyfriend who could easily beat him up won the Super Bowl. DAMN.”

“If you told me on this day that in 10 months she would be kissing her NFL player boyfriend on the field of the super bowl and hard launching him at the club I would’ve actually started barking like a dog,” wrote another.

One was even harsher. “This guy f***ing suuuuuuucks,” they wrote. “What an idiot!”

It’s hard to argue with the sentiment. Swift has been an all-conquering force of nature with the ultimate Midas touch in the past 12 months as her professional and personal life approaches perfection.

Why did Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn break up?

Immediately after their split, a source told People magazine Swift and Alwyn went from discussing marriage to calling it quits within a few months because of his unwillingness to embrace her superstardom.

“Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public,” the source said.

The writing was on the wall as she began planning her Eras tour, which has taken her fame to unprecedented heights.

Despite Swift never publicly addressing the split, there have been clues in her music.

In “Bejeweled”, a hit from her 2022 album Midnights, Swift sings about how “I miss sparkling”.

“Midnight Rain”, another song on the same album, sees Swift sing about “chasing that fame” while “he stayed the same”.

Swift couldn’t have found anyone more willing to embrace the spotlight than Kansas City Chiefs tight end Kelce.

After attending a Swift concert in the middle of last year and publicly shooting his shot, Kelce drew the pop star to one of his games in late September and the pair were confirmed as an item a few weeks later.

The relationship exposed Swift to millions of new fans because of the incredible reach of the NFL.

In turn, Kelce has become so famous he’s been forced to move out of his house - but the pair have embraced becoming America’s sweethearts.

Swift made perhaps her most pointed comments about the difference between her new and old relationship in an interview with Time Magazine when she was asked about the public nature of the Kelce courtship.

“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there, and we don’t care,” she said.

“The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone … we’re just proud of each other.”

She also lamented “locking myself away in my house for a lot of years”. “I’ll never get that time back,” she said. “I’m more trusting now than I was six years ago.”

As Swift’s fans have noted, saying goodbye to Alwyn could not have worked out better for the 34-year-old.

“Back then we didn’t know, but god had better plans for us,” one wrote.
