Sunrise star Samantha Armytage reveals how her partner Richard Lavender proposed
David ‘Kochie’ Koch grilled Sam Armytage on Sunrise this morning for details about her engagement to farmer Richard Lavender.
Samantha Armytage has gone into detail about her engagement to Richard Lavender.
Armytage returned to Sunrise this morning for the first time since announcing on social media over the weekend that she’s getting married.
“I’m very happy, very happy,” Armytage said on air this morning.
Her Sunrise co-host David ‘Kochie’ Koch grilled Armytage for details about the proposal which she did her best to fob off.
“It’s very private,” she said, before reluctantly sharing a few details.
Armytage said Lavender, a farmer who lives in the Southern Highlands of NSW, actually proposed a few weeks ago.
“You’ve kept it secret for a few weeks?” a shocked Kochie said.
“I had to wait for the ring to arrive,” Armytage replied.
Armytage said Lavender proposed as they were picking weeds together in a paddock on his 40-hectare property.
“He said, ‘Darling, do you want to marry me?’” she revealed. “It was just private and lovely. It was very romantic.”
Armytage said that Lavender asked her dad Mac for permission before popping the question.
“My parents love him. Both our families get on very well; it’s a very happy union.”
As for the wedding details, the Sunrise star said there are no plans yet.
“We’ll just take it easy,” she said.
Kochie then joked, “Are you having the wedding in Mexico? He (Lavender) looks a Mexican wedding sort of bloke.”
The comment was seemingly in reference to Karl Stefanovic’s highly publicised wedding to Jasmine Yarbrough in Cabo in 2018.
“No, oh my god!” Armytage laughed. “He (Lavender) would not do the Mexican wedding, I promise you that.”

HOW THEY MET
Armytage and Lavender were introduced by a mutual friend around Easter last year.
At the time, Lavender, 60, had no idea who Armytage was or what she did for a living.
It wasn’t until they’d been dating for a few weeks that Armytage made Lavender watch an episode of Sunrise so he could see what she does.
Armytage told Who magazine last year that she loves that Lavender is comfortable in his own skin.
“He doesn’t care what people think of him, which I admire greatly,” she said. “He’s very decent, very honest. I love that he’s so modest.”
As for Lavender, he loves that Armytage is “very natural” and not at all like the celebrities he has encountered in the past.
“I think a lot of the people who are in show business are a bit flouncy,” he told Who. “I’ve seen a few celebrities in public – it’s not always attractive.
“She has a quick wit, a terrific sense of humour,” he said about the Sunrise star.
ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Armytage announced her engagement on social media on the weekend by posting a photo with Lavender, complete with engagement ring, and the caption: “What a year.”
The Instagram post received more than 50,000 likes with her fellow Sunrise stars leaving messages of congratulations.
“Wow that’s such wonderful news,” wrote David Koch. “Congratulations to you and Rich from Libby and I.”
Co-star Edwina Bartholomew wrote: “Well, this is hands down the best thing to happen this year.”
Weather presenter Sam Mac wrote: “Well bloody done. So great to see some happy news!”
Mac also mentioned Armytage’s dog, Banjo, writing: “Banjo for ring bearer duties, calling it early.”
