Sophie Monk spills on bizarre mid-air meeting with new boyfriend

The former Bachelorette has revealed exactly how her bizarre mid-air romance with new boyfriend Joshua went down.

Sophie Monk spills on new relationship

Sophie Monk has spilled on her strange first meeting with new boyfriend Joshua Gross, admitting she was the one who made the first move.

The pair began chatting on a plane after “three champagnes” in business class last August and even shared a kiss mid-air.

“I asked him like, ‘Are you single?’ and then I said, ‘Can I kiss you?’ and he said ‘yup’,” Monk, 39, explained, adding that she had applied a stipulation before the smooch.

“I go, ‘OK, I just need to brush my teeth’, so we went to separate bathrooms and brushed our teeth.”

Gross, a marketing executive based in the US, “travels all the time” — meaning the couple often go weeks without seeing each other — but they’ve managed to make it work.

“We’re on the phone all day,” Monk told news.com.au, in an interview to promote her brand ambassadorship for Huawei & the Mate20 Pro. She credited her new Huawei’s “amazing” battery life with keeping their lines of communication (literally) open.

“My friend Oscar is a digital producer and he’d been raving about (Huawei phones) so when they asked me, I tried it and just went, ‘I’m in’. It’s so good. It’s so easy to use.”

The former Bachelorette also weighed in on the recent controversial season of The Bachelor, which saw Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins dump both finalists and finish up the show as a single man.

Monk revealed that she’d met Cummins, who’d seemed “really nice”, and applauded his decision to “be true” to himself.

“I don’t know the politics behind what happened (on Cummins’ season), but you’ve just got to be honest.”

She explained that she’d avoided feeling the pressure to choose a partner while filming the finale, as she’d never watched the show before signing up to be the Bachelorette.

“I just went on because I really wanted a boyfriend, but after my season I realised people love the fairytale and the romance.”

Monk chose millionaire publican Stu Laundy for her final rose in 2017, but their relationship lasted just three months after the finale aired. They announced their split amid swirling rumours that they’d been faking the romance for the sake of the show.

Laundy and Monk’s romance was short-lived, and they’re no longer in contact.

It’s a claim both have since firmly denied, but Monk did admit she’d felt “guilty” about the outcome.

“I just felt really guilty that Australia had invested so much — I wanted it to work for everyone, but you have to stay true to yourself. I can’t lie.”

So if Monk finds herself single again, will we see her pop up on another dating show?

“No, (The Bachelorette) didn’t work for me, did it? I’ve tried everything, I’ll just give up and buy nine cats.”
