Former Bachelorette Sam Frost has opened up about surviving an unhealthy relationship, revealing she had no idea it was “seriously wrong” until she began seeing a psychologist.

In a candid essay on her website Believe By Sam Frost, the Home And Away star revealed her “weak spot” — her struggles with depression, as well as the mental health issues Frost’s mother faced — became an unhealthy focus of her relationship

“I had no idea. I thought I was madly in love and had finally found my soulmate,” she wrote.

“It wasn’t until I started seeing a psychologist that I became aware of something being seriously wrong.”

Frost said during the relationship she felt like she was “weak, fragile, depressed,” resulting in her losing weight, wearing push up bras and even dyeing her hair in a bid to impress him.

She claimed the unnamed former partner told her she needed “serious help”.

Frost said she eventually decided to seek the help of a psychologist who “saved” her and “changed her life”.

She has now been in a relationship with Dave Bashford for the past two years and earlier this week asked him to share his perspective on having a partner who suffers from depression and anxiety.

Bashford, 27, wrote in an essay that “reassurance” had become a “key part of life” for him, and that living with a partner who suffers from mental illness was “challenging”.

“Some of the signs your partner is struggling with mental illness are; short tempered, irrational, emotional, distant and unmotivated,” he said.

“ … I know I can’t make the pain or sadness go away. All I can tell her is how much I love her, and remind her that everything is going to be OK.

“When Sam is struggling I am always there for her, I don’t ever get upset or angry … If her anxiety or depression gets in the way of something we had planned, which happens sometimes, I reassure her that everything is OK and whatever the problem is, we can work through it together.”

Frost’s new website is run in with her sister Kristine with the aim of shining a light on mental health. It encourages other women to share their stories and “build each other up with support, kindness and acceptance.”
