‘People find it fascinating and odd’: Inside Hollywood’s most unconventional relationship
SARAH Paulson made headlines when she went public with her love for fellow actor Holland Taylor, 32 years her senior. Now, she opens up about the “odd” pairing.
SARAH Paulson never worried about balancing her private and professional lives until she was told she had to.
“Early on, when people found out I was with [74-year-old girlfriend Holland Taylor], some said, ‘I think you have to be careful. I’m afraid it’s going to affect your career negatively,’” the American Horror Story star, 42, told The Edit in an interview released on Thursday. “I was like, what? It never occurred to me at all.”
The negativity managed to take up residence in the back of her mind, however, when she debated professing her love for Taylor on the red carpet at the 2016 Emmys.
“It occurred to me, ‘Should I not?’ And then I thought, ‘Why would I not?’” Paulson recalled. “The fact I’m having this thought is wrong. But I had a moment of societal concern, wondering if, maybe, people who didn’t know that about me would be like, ‘Wait, what?’ But then, you know, I did it anyway.”
She explained: “My life choices are, um, unconventional. I’m with a much older person and people find that totally fascinating and odd, and, to me, it’s the least interesting thing about me. But I do feel a bit unconventional. I am a woman of a certain age who chose not to have children, and who has made my career my priority. I am the captain of my own ship and I’ve never looked to anyone else to validate that or tell me it’s okay.”
Thankfully, Paulson gets all the validation she needs from Taylor, who is equally open about their love for one another.
In January, Taylor gushed of Paulson: “I must say it has to be part of what has to be the most wonderful thing in my life, is the whole embrace of this wonderful relationship which makes everything else makes sense. I’m the luckiest person in the world. I can’t talk about my life today and not mention this wonderful love.”
