Martin Short addresses dating speculation with Meryl Streep
Months after splitting from her husband, Meryl Streep rumoured to be dating her latest co-star – who has already commented on speculation.
Martin Short has addressed speculation that he is dating Meryl Streep.
Rumours of a romance between the Only Murders in the Building co-stars started running wild after they looked cozy while sitting together at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday — but a rep for Short denied the claims.
Although the actors grew close while playing love interests on the hit Hulu show, the spokesperson told People Tuesday that they “are just very good friends, nothing more.”
During the awards show, Streep, 74, and Short, 73, were photographed looking quite comfortable with each other, leading viewers to speculate on social media that their friendship had turned romantic.
“Sitting with the knowledge that Meryl Streep and Martin Short might be in love but I have no proof,” one person tweeted.
“Meryl Streep & Martin Short allegedly dating is now my Roman Empire,” another joked.
“Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating … because if that’s true … that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft,” a third chimed in.
“Are we not gonna talk about Meryl Streep and Martin Short sitting together,” someone else added.
In October, it was announced Streep had split from her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer.
A spokesperson for the Oscar-winning icon revealed at the time that the pair had been quietly “separated for more than six years” and living different lives.
Although the former couple had not been seen together since 2018, Streep was photographed wearing her wedding ring up until the news broke.
The Mamma Mia! star and the feted sculptor share four children: singer-songwriter Henry Wolfe, 44, and actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 32.
Following news of her break-up, Streep and her four kids put on a united front at the Academy Museum Gala, where they all matched in black.
Meanwhile, Short’s late wife, Nancy Dolman, lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2010 at age 58.
The couple, who were married for nearly 30 years, shared daughter Katherine, 40, and sons Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34.
Short called their marriage “a triumph” in an interview with AARP in 2019, admitting he still talks to Dolman “all the time” despite her death.
“I believe that when people die, they zoom into the people that love them,” he explained. “This idea that it just ends, and don’t speak of them — that’s wrong. That’s based on denial that we’re all going to die. So to me, she’s still here.”
The Three Amigos! star has not publicly dated anyone in recent years.
