Kelly Clarkson has revealed that her tumultuous marriage to her ex-husband sparked a battle with depression.

The pop star has revealed that she struggled to work through her “extraordinarily hard” depression after divorcing her husband and manager, Brandon Blackstock.

Clarkson, who was locked in a bitter divorce battle for years following their split, said she found the ordeal “extrordinairly hard” and it left her struggling to put the pieces back together.

“The level of depression and things that come with divorce or grieving is extraordinarily hard,” she told People. “You feel alone, and it’s just a blessing to be able to have that outlet for those emotions that are overwhelming.”

Clarkson released her latest album, Chemistry, last year, and she went on to share how it became an “outlet” for her to vent her feelings and frustrations.

“I didn’t see it other than: This is my outlet. I’m a let-go person; I don’t hold grudges. So it was really delving into what happened in my life and why — and what am I going to do about it?” she admitted. “I cannot express how appreciative I feel for having that kind of healthy outlet.”

Despite her heartbreaking split, Clarkson’s career has continued to soar to new levels.

Chemistry is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys this year, and her talk show has scored a whopping six wins at the Daytime Emmy Awards — including Outstanding Daytime Talk Series and Host for Clarkson.

It comes after court documents revealed a shocking insight into Clarkson’s former marriage.

The singer testified in court that she had told her husband for years that she wanted to be on talent show The Voice. However, he allegedly dashed her hopes, telling her that TV executives would never hire her because they were “looking for a more sex symbol type” of woman such as Rihanna.

When questioned regarding whether she remembered the conversation with her ex, court documents revealed the star responded: “Well, a wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, so that stays.”

Clarkson and Blackstock were married for nearly seven years before she filed for divorce in June 2020, which was finalised two years later.

Clarkson has spoken about her divorce publicly on a number of occasions, calling the process “difficult”.
