‘Inevitable’: Nicole Kidman’s pals had ‘known for a while’ about split

Insiders have revealed some shocking new details about Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s surprise marriage breakdown.

Nicole and Keith's 'perfect' marriage before split

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s pals have known about their shock split for quite some time, according to new reports.

A source close to the former couple revealed that it “really hasn’t been a secret” to their inner circle.

“People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable,” an insider told People, adding that Kidman and Urban have “been living separately for a while now.”

It’s believed that Kidman has turned to her close family, with her sister stepping up and becoming her “rock” in recent months as she tries to navigate through the split. .

“Nicole’s sister has been a rock, and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” they said.

Meanwhile, it comes after a resurfaced interview from the past year where Urban made it clear he did not welcome interview questions about the actress or their marriage.

In one instance, the 57-year-old left two Adelaide radio hosts in shock when he hung up on them live on air after they asked an intimate question about Kidman

Back in July, Urban was in good spirits when called into Mix 102.3’s Hayley & Max in the Morning weeks before kicking off the Aussie leg of his High and Alive world tour, but the interview quickly went pear-shaped.

When hosts Hayley Pearson and Max Burford asked him to take part in the show’s “Wall of Truth” segment, Urban was keen, but it seems he did not expect the questions to be so personal.

“What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV and radio?” Burford asked him before the line grew silent.

“What just happened here?” Burford asked as a producer said, “He’s disconnected from Zoom.”

“I think his team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question,” the producer added. “He’s gone, see you Keith.”

Pearson was rattled with what unfolded on air and said she had a feeling “that would happen”.

“Does Keith Urban hate us? Do we have beef with Keith Urban now?” Burford wondered before telling her, “If you knew this was going to happen, Hayley, why didn’t you stop me asking the question?”

The Adelaide duo were not the only Aussie radio hosts to seemingly annoy Urban with questions about his famous wife.

In September last year, when the country music star was invited on the Jam Nation with Jonesy & Amanda podcast to chat about his new album, High, and upcoming world tour, he was not too pleased when the preceding chat focused on Kidman and the origins of their relationship.

“Speaking of your amazing love story with Nicole, you met at G’day Australia. Is that what it was called?” host Amanda Keller asked Urban, to which he bluntly corrected her: “G’day LA.”

Keller suggested that if the pair hadn’t met that fateful night in 2005, they perhaps might never have met at all. They were married one year later in an intimate Sydney ceremony.

“If you hadn’t both been there that day, would your paths somewhere have inevitably crossed? Or maybe ... this incredible love story wouldn’t have happened,” she wondered.

“No, I think it would,” Urban insisted.

“Yeah? Are you a believer in fate or do you think it’s two Australians, it would have happened?” she pushed, with Urban replying, “No idea.”

Keller continued her line of questioning and the interview became more awkward when Urban appeared to run out of patience.

“I just often think that if you weren’t at that event, maybe you don’t have the same friendship group, it may have never have happened,” Keller persisted.

“Never know,” Urban said.

Clearly done with questions about his wife, Urban shut down Keller with three simple words: “Anyway, moving on.”

These awkward radio interviews were in stark contrast to the couple’s early years when Urban happily and publicly expressed his love for Kidman.

In one interview, he thanked her for staying by his side when he entered rehab for substance abuse issues just four months after they got married, saying it was the “miracle” of marriage that pulled him through.

“I was very, very blessed to have Nic call an intervention on me. I had a tight group of friends around me for the intervention,” he told Rolling Stone in 2014. “I use the expression ‘I was born into her,’ and that’s how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction.”

In 2016, Urban told CBS News that “meeting her and getting married wasn’t life-changing, it was life-beginning. It was literally like, ‘OK now life starts.’”

Then in April 2024, when Kidman was honoured with an AFI Life Achievement Award, Urban gave an emotional speech in her honour.

“She also has a bit of a mantra, and that is: Choose love,” he told the audience at the ceremony in LA.

“Now I’ve watched her do this many times, navigating emotionally complex things that she’s gone through with so many people. She always chooses that phrase; she lives by it. Choose love. She has the capacity to love like no one I’ve ever met.”
