How a text from John Mayer ended Jessica Simpson’s relationship
Jessica Simpson has revealed how her relationship with a fellow star was destroyed by a sudden text from one of her high-profile exes.
Jessica Simpson knows her relationship with ex-boyfriend John Mayer was tumultuous.
The Open Book author, 39, sat down with US Today show co-anchor Hoda Kotb for an interview airing this week and admitted there were positive and negative aspects to her life with Mayer.
“We were great at intimacy,” she said in a preview clip. “We were great at loving each other. That was easy, but the relationship was very complex.”
Simpson noted that she and the Your Body Is a Wonderland singer, 42, were on-again, off-again throughout the majority of their courtship.
“I went back close to nine times,” she said.
One of those times came after the sudden end of her relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in 2009, which she has now revealed was directly caused by Mayer, who had sent her a text the night before her birthday.
“Tony confronted me with it immediately,” she said in an excerpt published on RadarOnline, adding that he accused her of seeing Mayer behind his back.
“I hadn’t cheated on Tony at all,” Simpson insisted, but Romo didn’t believe her and “within that second, he broke up with me right there”.
After that, the singer decided to reunite with Mayer after all.
“I wouldn’t be with him because of Tony, and now Tony was gone. I lost my feeling of agency in my life once again and felt I should just give in and be with John. He had promised forever in my parents’ backyard. Who was I to argue?”
The singer-turned-designer also writes candidly in her memoir about her struggles with alcohol and pill addiction as well as her relationship with Mayer that started in 2006. Of the latter, she told The New York Times she didn’t care what he thought about her words.
“I don’t think he’ll be shocked,” she told the publication. “He knows these stories.”
As for Simpson’s ex-husband Nick Lachey, he was recently overheard saying about her new tell-all: “I have not read a single word.”
Last week, the A Public Affair singer admitted she was drunk during a 2007 appearance on Ellen.
