Geoff Huegill, wife Sara call it quits after 13 years
After a trying to salvage their marriage for a year, former Olympic swimmer Geoff Huegill and wife Sara have announced it’s over.
Olympic silver medallist Geoff Huegill and his wife Sara have separated after 13 years together.
Huegill took to Instagram to announce the couple had split, saying their decision to separate was “amicable”.
“It’s with a heavy heart that after 13 years together Sara and I have made the decision to amicably separate,” Huegill wrote.
“We continue to remain friends as our focus will always be about providing a positive, loving and beautiful future for our girls.”
The 39-year-old former Olympian married Sara in 2011 and the couple are parents to two young girls, Gigi, 5, and Mila, 3.
The Huegill family have had a difficult year after Sara was charged with stealing a pair of $2500 pants from a Byron Bay boutique in May.
Police alleged Ms Huegill was caught with the black pants stuffed in her handbag after the store’s manager followed her down the street and flagged down two police offices on horses.
A day before her first court appearance for the charges, Huegill took to Instagram to defend his wife. It would be the last photo he posted of the two of them.
“At times, good people make poor choices,” Huegill wrote in his lengthy Instagram caption.
“We all trip over and make mistakes and, unfortunately, we let others down. But that doesn’t make us bad people.
“There are no excuses for the poor choices, however, when we look back at a moment in time, naturally there are things we would all do differently.”
Huegill went on to say his only focus was on his wife’s mental health.
“For now, my primary focus is to make sure that the health and wellbeing of my best friend is managed, so she can be the best person she can be for herself and for our family,” he wrote.
In August, the charges against Ms Huegill were dropped on mental health grounds.
