Erin Molan gives rare insight into dating life as she reveals her worst first date ever
The TV and radio personality has given insight into her dating life, while detailing one of her most horrid dating encounters.
TV and radio personality Erin Molan has shared some details about her dating life – and she didn’t shy away from revealing a couple of disaster stories.
Although the 39-year-old keeps her personal life private, she happily opened up about her past experiences to Confidential, even sharing the worst first date she’s ever been on.
“I once went on a date with a bloke while I was working at Channel 9 in Willoughby, years ago,” said Molan, who now hosts a self-titled primetime current affairs program on Sky News and fronts the 2Day FM breakfast show Hughesy, Ed and Erin.
“He came and picked me up, and we went to a restaurant in Paddington. It was awful and awkward, one of those times when you know straight away that you’ve got zero interest.”
In an attempt to cut the date short, Molan told the man she had an early start the next morning. He still insisted on driving her home, so she accepted, but the car ride over the Harbour Bridge became awkward once they missed their exit.
“I kid you not, he asked me for money for the extra toll,” Molan recalled, adding she paid him the $5 in coins “and never spoke to him again”.
A date with another suitor also did not go to plan. Molan recalled thinking she had found her “future husband” – a Brisbane truck driver she met in Hawaii. But their holiday romance did not resonate once back on Aussie shores.
“I remember getting to his place, sitting on the couch with his housemate, and he couldn’t even look at me,” she said.
Molan’s past experiences could have factored in her decision to “marry” herself in an event hosted by her radio program, Hughesy, Ed and Erin. The wedding extravaganza – held at the Doltone House in Sydney – included a number of other single women dressed in wedding gowns who also wanted to marry themselves.
“I’m going to be completely honest… I didn’t want to do this… at all,” Molan wrote in an Instagram post about the event.
“We came up with this concept late last year because so many of our listeners were single mums/unmarried/unlucky in love/unhappy in their relationships and we just thought WHY wait until you’ve met the one… just marry yourself.”
She said she almost pulled out in January after losing her father Jim Molan, who was a Senator for NSW and served in the Australian Army for 40 years.
“One of the million things that broke my heart about that was the realisation that he’d never be able to walk me down the aisle,” she said.
“I’ve never dreamt of a wedding and it’s never been really that important to me… but the thought of even doing it for a radio segment, without him, made me feel sick… and I nearly pulled out so many times.”
But she did have the blessing of her daughter, Eliza, who she shares with her former fiancé Sean Ogilvy.
“It was actually my 4 year old who got me over the line,” she said. “I told her about it and she was more excited than I’ve ever seen her… and that helped me immensely.”
