Brynne Edelsten hit ‘rock bottom’ after divorce, ended up homeless
Brynne Edelsten has detailed how she hit “rock bottom” after her divorce from Geoffrey Edelsten, which left her with no money or home.
Brynne Edelsten has opened up about becoming “homeless” following her high-profile divorce from Geoffrey Edelsten.
The 39-year-old US socialite, who married the late millionaire in 2009, went from living a life of luxury and starring on reality TV shows to entering “crisis accommodation” in the aftermath of their 2014 split.
Speaking on Sunday night’s Seven News Spotlight: The Fame Game, the new mum said the marriage breakdown saw her go down a destructive path.
“I haven’t probably had the best relationships since [the divorce] … There’s been domestic violence, at one point, [I was] left homeless and gone into crisis accommodation,” she said.
“To actually rebuild myself and love myself again and get back on my own two feet … I was so lucky to have support behind me.”
It’s understood Brynne, who was declared bankrupt in 2016, did not receive a monetary divorce settlement from her ex-husband.
Geoffrey, who died in June last year aged 78, famously left nothing for Brynne in his will.
He wrote in the 2017 document: “I have made no provision for my former wife Brynne as we are divorced and I had made substantial and excessive provision for her during my marriage to her,” the will stated.
Brynne also opened up about the pair’s lavish wedding at Crown Melbourne, which was rumoured to have cost $3 million. She was 26 at the time, while Geoffrey was aged 66.
“It was kind of a big wedding, and kind of a big deal when we got married,” Brynne said.
“There were 500 guests, and I knew seven or 11 people, [and] that was my family …
“Just being in that relationship, I got a lot of really amazing opportunities. [I was on] Dancing with the Stars, [I got] my own reality show … [It was a] crazy lifestyle.”
But Brynne, who famously quit SAS Australia last year after just six hours, said she had struggled to find success after her divorce.
“Unfortunately, I haven’t really succeeded in any of the things that I’ve tried,” she said.
“It’s not that I don’t have a talent, I just haven’t found it yet.”
Brynne, who was pregnant at the time of filming, also talked about becoming a mother for the first time. She welcomed a baby girl in April.
The former fitness instructor confirmed the baby’s mystery father isn’t in the picture.
“I didn’t think I could have kids, so falling pregnant was the last thing on my mind. I went to the doctor, and turned out I was five months,” she said.
“The dad is aware of her, but no, he’s not in the picture. It’s one of those things … I’m happy to have her all to myself. Maybe I’m selfish, but she can be all mine.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Brynne rejected drug trafficking charges brought against her in Melbourne in May last year.
The former TV star, who was working at a Japanese-themed karaoke bar in Melbourne’s CBD at the time, was accused of drug trafficking, possessing and using methylamphetamine, and deal property suspected proceeds of crime. The charges were dropped in February, with the exception of the charge of methylamphetamine possession and use.
“I had gone to visit a friend. I had stepped three feet onto his front lawn and all of a sudden we were being raided,” Brynne recalled.
“I knew I had nothing to worry about, I didn’t have any drugs, I didn’t do anything wrong. But I was charged with all these things.”
In relation to the ongoing charge, Brynne has applied to be dealt with via a diversion program through the magistrates court, with a hearing scheduled for August.
