A celebrity’s reaction to Britney Spears’ engagement has gone viral.

Spears announced on Instagram this morning that her boyfriend of four years, Sam Asghari, had proposed. She shared a sweet video of the two of them together and captioned the post: “I can’t fu**ing believe it.”

The singer was inundated with messages of congratulations from fans and fellow stars including Paris Hilton, Kesha and Michelle Visage.

But it was Octavia Spencer’s hilarious and brutal response that garnered a lot of attention.

The actress, best known for The Help and Hidden Figures, commented on Spears’ post: “Make him sign a prenup.”

Her comment went viral before she deleted it from Spears’ post.

Britney and Sam’s dating history

Spears and Asghari first met in 2016 on the set of her music video for Slumber Party.

“I was excited that I (would) get to meet one of the biggest artists of all time,” Asghari told Men’s Health in 2018. “I had butterflies.”

But things got off to a bad start when Asghari tried to make a joke which failed spectacularly.

“She said, ‘Hi, I’m Britney,’ and I said, ‘I’m sorry, what’s your name again?’” he recalled. “I tried to be funny. I don’t think anybody got it.”

Despite the rocky start, the pair swapped numbers and Spears eventually organised a date.

“I found his number in my bag. I was like, ‘He is really cute. This guy is really cute,’” Spears said in 2017. “So then I called him, and ever since then, he is just a really fun, funny person.”

Asghari has said in interviews that Spears “motivates me more than anyone”.

“It’s crazy how I can be humbled by a person like her,” he told Men’s Health. “If I could be that humble when I’m that high in life, that would be the best thing. I grew up with three sisters, and my personality is just to be a supportive person for my family. And she’s family. I’m always going to support her. She is another blessing that happened to me.”

Spears was previously married to Jason Alexander for just 55 hours in 2004 and Kevin Federline from 2004 to 2007.

Britney’s conservatorship battle

Asghari has been supporting Spears in her bid to end the conservatorship that has controlled her life for 13 years.

Her quest received a big boost last week when her dad, Jamie Spears, filed a petition to end his the court-ordered conservatorship.

The filing came weeks after Jamie said he was prepared to step back from his role as conservator, and after repeated requests from the pop star to remove him from what she and her supporters say is a cruel and exploitative arrangement.

“Recent events related to this conservatorship have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist,” the filing stated.

“Ms Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship. She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy.

“She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses.

“In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding,” the petition said.

The filing added that Jamie Spears wants “what is best for his daughter” and that she “believes that she can handle her own life.”

Mathew Rosengart, Britney’s lawyer, said the petition was a “vindication” for his client.

Spears, 39, rocketed to fame in her teens but suffered a highly public 2007 breakdown, attacking a paparazzo’s car at a gas station.

That led to her being placed under the unusual legal guardianship largely governed by her father.

She has repeatedly lashed out at her father over the conservatorship, claiming in court testimonies and social media posts the arrangement amounted to “cruelty,” and accusing him of profiting from the system.

Britney alleged in court that she had been prevented from having a contraceptive IUD removed, despite wanting more children, and was forcefully put on medication that made her feel “drunk”.

Jamie Spears’ removal has been a longstanding demand of devoted global fans campaigning under the #FreeBritney slogan.
