Australian musician Adam Hyde is a star in his own right. But since he and Abbie Chatfield publicly announced their relationship this week, he has been widely referred to as “Abbie Chatfield’s new boyfriend” – and she’s not down with that, nor are his fans.

The muso is one half of the ARIA-winning electric duo Peking Duk, with Hyde and his bandmate Reuben Styles favourites on the music scene since they released their Passion Pit bootleg remix in 2012.

Yet somehow some TikTok users have only just been acquainted with him this week, when he joined Chatfield on her It’s A Lot With Abbie Chatfield podcast to reveal they’ve been secretly dating.

It dawned on one TikToker that she had in fact unknowingly shared an encounter with Hyde months ago when he helped her fix a juicer at the cafe she worked – and she was amused at the two degrees of separation from Chatfield.

“When you unknowingly invite abbie chatfields new boyfriend into your work to unclog the juicer 6 months ago,” the user captioned a video of the moment on TikTok.

The comments section of the user’s post blew up, with many pointing out that Hyde was famous long before Chatfield appeared on The Bachelor in 2019.

“Calling him Abbie’s boyfriend before Peking Duk is crazy,” wrote one, while another commented, “poor bloke spent years building a career in the music industry only to be known as abbie chatfields boyfriend.”

“What a way to minimise an incredibly successful music career,” commented another, with one saying, “He is more famous than Abbie.”

Even Chatfield herself came to his defence.

“Hey guys did you know this dude is from Peking duk?” she wrote.

However, some defended the TikToker, saying it’s about time the tables were turned.

“Let men live in a matriarchal world for once. I’m here for it,” one pointed out, with another echoing, “So funny men jumping up and down about this description when women are constantly described this way in media.”

One person who isn’t jumping up and down with outrage is Hyde himself, who stuck up for the TikToker on the platform via his own handle @keliholiday.

“Happy to help ya out legend,” he wrote referencing his ability to fix the juicer. “to ppl in comments thank you 4 the concerns but I’ll happily be labelled @AbbieChatfield’s boyfriend any day X.”
