GREY'S Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo has defended her comments, calling The Emmys "dated", despite the fact she says her remarks were meant to be"off the record".

Pompeo appeared on US cable show Watch What Happens Liveto explain that her controversial comments regarding the show weren’t supposed to be printed.

Speaking to host Andy Cohen, Pompeo explained that she made the comments while walking into an interview.

"I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all," the actress was quoted, speaking to the Associated Press.

"The Emmys felt so dated to me. That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of colour in that dance number?"

Pompeo went on to laud Grey's Anatomy by comparison, saying that the series prides itself on the diversity of its cast - guided by show creator Shonda Rimes.

"I’m extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast, which represents the world that I walk around in every day," she said.

The actress also said that her team is looking into how the comments were published, even though she stands by what she said.
