HIS Popeye Doyle days are behind him but Gene Hackman still has a bit of the rogue cop in him.

Hackman allegedly slapped a homeless man who called his wife the C-word outside a restaurant in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Police confirmed that the 82-year-old Oscar-winner hit Bruce Becker after Becker became aggressive.

They interviewed Hackman and his wife and determined that the slap was in self-defence.

Hackman and his wife have a home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Hackman has won two Academy Awards and been nominated for three others over a career that has spanned five decades.

He took the Best Actor trophy for his portrayal of Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in The French Connection in 1971 and the Best Supporting Actor award for Unforgiven in 1992.
