Emily in Paris star Ashley Park slammed for laughing at new Pope in Instagram video: ‘Disrespectful’
The star of a hit Netflix series has been slammed online after she filmed herself mocking the new Pope in an Instagram video.
Netflix star Ashley Park has been slammed online for appearing to “disrespect” the newly elected Pope Leo XIV.
The actress is currently in Rome filming the Season 5 of the Netflix series Emily in Paris, and is in the amidst of all the formalities surrounding the momentous occasion whereby a first-ever American has become the leader of the Catholic Church.
However, the 33-year-old Korean-American actress does not understand what the big deal is about the new appointment as she points out in an Instagram video.
“It’s my first day filming in Rome and they just chose the Pope. Does anyone care?” she asked her hair and make-up artist Carole Nicolas, who appeared to sarcastically respond, “Fantastic” as Park and the rest of the team laughed.
“Fantastic, the Pope,” Park repeated, laughing.
“We’re in a trailer so you can’t tell we’re in Rome, but we’re here and we heard the church bells a’ringing!”
She continued to mock the activity within the Vatican in a separate Instagram video, where she pretended to rush on to the set after running late due to the “traffic”.
“Mindy’s first day back filming #emilyinparis season 5!” she captioned the clip, referring to her character.
“No I wasn't late, yes the conclave picked the pope (woooo!), yes the traffic was crazyyyy, and yes I love romaaaaa.”
While Park found humour in the important occasion, the folks over on social have frowned upon her antics, labelling her “disrespectful” and “tacky”.
“Be respectful of others’ religion or just don’t post about it,” one commented on Instagram, as another wrote, “Im not even Catholic, but I would never disrespect anyone’s religion. You are a very tacky young lady.”
“A lot of people care,” one replied in direct response to Park’s question, while yet another echoed, “More people care about the pope than about you filming.”
“So I’m assuming you made your little video there to get more attention… so disrespectful,” another added.
American Cardinal Robert Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV, was named Pope Francis’s successor on Thursday three weeks after his death.
On Thursday, white smoke emerged from the roof of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican to signify the new appointment, in which Prevost beat out competition from Pietro Parolin of Italy who was thought to be the favourite.
“Habemus Papam [‘We have a pope’],” said Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberttim in Latin from the Vatican balcony as he announced that the 69-year-old will now lead the Catholic Church.
Speaking in Italian, Pope Leo’s first words to the waiting crowd were “peace be with you all”.
He thanked his predecessor Pope Francis and said he wanted to “build bridges”.
“I would like to offer a greeting of peace to reach your families, all of you, wherever you are. May peace be with you,” he said in Italian.
