Elon Musk been trolled over a recent tweet mocking Twitter and other major companies for using rainbow logos during the LGBTQI Pride Month.

Elon Musk trolls ‘woke’ publication for attempting to call him out

Billionaire Elon Musk has been trolled over a new tweet appearing to mock major companies for using rainbow logos as a show of support during LGBTQI Pride Month.

Pride Month is celebrated every June in most Western countries and during this time it is common for companies to change their logos to rainbow colours to acknowledge the celebration of the LGBTQI community.

Mr Musk clearly is not a fan of this type of display from companies, a fact he made very clear on his Twitter on Wednesday.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder posted a meme of a man screaming, “Here it comes” as a tornado approaches.

Inside the tornado are rainbow logos from a number of major companies, including Twitter, which he is in the process of purchasing for $US44 billion ($A63.89 billion).

“June is almost here,” a caption on the image reads.

The tweet hasn’t gone down too well with users, with many taking the post to mean Mr Musk didn’t support Pride Month.

“@elonmusk punching down for pride month. How do @Tesla shareholders deal with this. I wanted a Tesla for ages. screw that . @LucidMotors will get my business. I can’t be the only one who has been turned off the brand by the owner,” Canadian musician Chad Richardson said.

Well-known US lawyer, Lisa Bloom, also hit out Mr Musk, calling him a “snowflake”.

“Poor billionaire Elon Musk, scared of Pride Month. What a snowflake,” she wrote.

Other users were quick to point out that his own company Tesla is known for openly celebrating Pride Month.

“No corp rainbow logo is going to beat a rainbow Model 3 Pride parade,” said one users, sharing a picture of the company taking part in a parade in 2018.

“Damn, those woke CEOs,” another person said, sharing a picture from the same parade showing a rainbow Tesla car.

“Pick a side bro,” another added.

However, others suggested that Mr Musk’s post wasn’t about mocking pride month, but about mocking companies that change their logos while offering no real help to the LGBTQI community.

A tweet written by Mr Musk back in 2018 offers a bit more insight into what he was possibly trying to achieve with the meme.

The billionaire was speaking about how Tesla scored 100/100 four years in a row on LGBTQI equality.

“‘Virtue signalling’ is super annoying & there are lots of phonies who are actually huge jerks, but jump on every social cause du jour. But I’m really proud of the fact that # of changes Tesla had to make to achieve 100/100 (before even knowing about the LGBTQ index) was zero,” he said.

The trend of companies introducing a rainbow logo during pride month has been around for a long time, but social media users have noticed discrepancies in countries with multiple branches across the world.

Last year, Fortune Magazine found that for countries that engaged Pride and where LGBTQI rights were celebrated, major companies would deck out their social media pages with rainbows and pro-pride hashtags.

Meanwhile, social media accounts for the same companies but based in other locations, such as the Middle East or Asia, would opt out of engaging in the celebrations.

“The gap between the two approaches hasn’t gone unnoticed. Some Twitter users have been quick to call out companies’ conflicting accounts as opportunistic and signs of ‘corporate wokeism’ – or shallow efforts to be seen as socially progressive only when it will burnish the brand,” the report stated.

However, there are still some that aren’t convinced Mr Musk is a true ally to the LGBTQI community.

Major LGBTQI media advocacy organisation, GLAAD, lashed out at the Tesla CEO following news he was in the process of purchasing Twitter.

“Musk has a record of posting content targeting LGBTQ people and other marginalised peopley,” the company said in a statement in April.

“Twitter has posted ‘The Twitter Rules’ to ‘ensure all people can participate in the public conversation freely and safely’ which includes rules against targeted abuse or harassment or incitement of such targeting, based on protected characteristics, including sexual orientation and gender identity.”

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, said public figures need to be “held accountable” when posting about harmful opinions.

“Twitter should hold to its principles and the industry standard of prohibiting speech that endangers people, spreads misinformation, and incites harassment and abuse,” she said.

“LGBTQ people are at disproportionate risk for harassment online and violence in real life. The cost of hate speech further erodes basic safety and civility across society.

“Elon Musk and his investors should prioritise content moderation to create spaces where truth is elevated over harmful and inaccurate opinions and where public figures are held accountable.”
