Ed Sheeran reveals awkward proposal with now-wife Cherry Seaborn

He writes some of the most beautiful love songs of our time, but things weren’t quite so ‘Perfect’ when Ed Sheeran got down on one knee.

When he proposed to childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn in late 2017, Ed Sheeran wanted the moment to be ‘Perfect’.

In a rare interview about his private life, the British singer, 30, opened up for the first time about when he got down on one knee to Cherry, saying she was so shocked she asked if he was “f**king joking.”

Speaking on Norwegian-Swedish talk show Skavlan, the Thinking Out Loud singer said he “didn’t know if she was going to say yes” when he decided he wanted to ask her.

“I remember getting down on one knee and I said, ‘Will you marry me?’. And she was like, ‘Are you f**king joking?’,” Sheeran said.

“There was this long silence and I just went, ‘Please?’

“It was the most human I have ever felt because in my career, sometimes you find it is like, ‘Can I do this?’ and people are like, ‘Yeah’.

“You kind of get to a point where it becomes normal and then you are in a situation where you are literally on your knees being like, ‘Will you marry me?’

“It is such a huge life decision someone has to make in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, she did say yes.”

Sheeran said Cherry’s reaction was not the only thing that was less than ideal.

The winter weather in Suffolk also put a rather large spanner in the works.

“On the day it was p***ing down with rain and I’d built a f**king pergola at the end of the garden to do it. Sunset, pergola, some wine … And it was p***ing down with rain,” he said.

“I kept saying we should go for a walk and she was like, ‘No!’ I was like, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to go for a walk?’

“Time was ticking. There was a date engraved on the ring and I was like, ‘I’ve got to do it today!’

“(Then) it gets to 9pm and I was like, ‘For f**k sake!’”.

They do say the course of true love never does run smooth.

But they got there in the end having married in early 2018 – soon after their engagement – and welcoming their first child, daughter Lyra, in August last year.

The pair have known each other since they were teenagers but began dating in 2015.
