Coronavirus: Ryan Reynolds takes cheeky swipe at fellow celebs for pandemic response

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has mocked the stars who have stepped into the limelight during the coronavirus crisis with a hilarious new video.

Coronavirus: Should Australia go into lockdown?

Ryan Reynolds has shared a public service announcement to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus in Canada – and poked fun at fellow celebrities feeling self-important amid the ongoing crisis.

The Canadian actor shared the brief one-minute video on his Twitter page in response to a social media chain launched by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In it, the actor struck a serious tone while asking fellow Canadians to stay at home in an effort to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

“Thank you, Prime Minister Trudeau,” Reynolds says in the video of himself sitting on the couch and speaking directly to camera. “We need to work together to flatten the curve and fight off COVID-19.”

The 43-year-old Deadpool star then joked about the many ways in which celebrities are seizing the current world health crisis for attention on social media.

“I think in times of crisis, I think we all know that it’s the celebrities that we count on most,” he deadpanned. “They’re the ones that are going to get us through this … right after health care workers, of course … First responders, people who work in essential services, ping pong players, mannequins — they’re great — childhood imaginary friends, sure. Like 400 other types of people.”

The actor then concluded his message on a serious note by asking his followers to practice social distancing and encouraging them to look ahead to the future.

“Look, stay at home, practice social distancing, wash your hands. We are going to get through this thing, we’re going to get through this thing together,” Reynolds concluded.

Trudeau, whose wife tested positive for the virus, started the social media chain calling on high-profile people to help him “plank the curve”.

Reynolds ended his video by nominating Canadian musician Steven Page, his brother, Terry Reynolds, and fellow actor Seth Rogen.

The Canadian Prime Minister’s approach is similar to that of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who enlisted New York celebrities such as Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Alec Baldwin and more to spread a similar message about social distancing to citizens of the state.
