Tom Hanks tests positive for coronavirus

Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson movements around Australia are being traced after the pair was diagnosed with coronavirus.

The Hollywood power couple had visited several Australian travel hot spots in recent days.

Wilson performed at the Sydney Opera House just days before she was diagnosed with the deadly infection.

The singer-songwriter performed at the Opera House on Saturday and the Emporium Hotel in Brisbane’s South Bank last Thursday.

There were 207 people at the Opera House performance and organisers said they were getting in touch with anyone who had close contact with the couple at the event.

Hanks had also been at Bondi Beach and on the Gold Coast and Wilson appeared on Channel 9’s Today Extra in Sydney.

Hanks made the announcement the pair had been diagnosed in a post on Instagram.

“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia,” he wrote.

“We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive.

“Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves! Hanx!”

The Hollywood power couple are both aged 63.

The couple have posted snaps around Sydney on social media, with Wilson sharing a photo on a boat outside the Opera House three days ago.

“Can’t get enough of Sydney!,” she wrote.

In another post she wrote: “Oh, @Sydney You are beautiful and @sydneyoperahouse you made a dream come true tonight. Performing at this iconic place is unlike any other. And, the warmth of the audience made me feel so welcome. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Wilson also appeared on Today Extra show two days ago.

“Sydney you are glorious and beautiful and warm and wonderful,” she wrote.

Hanks also posted a photo at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach four days ago.

General manager of the luxury Emporium Hotel, Charles Martin, said they were looking into whether further action would need to be taken after cleaning and sanitisation had taken place.

“Following today’s announcement, we have taken active steps to brief our staff on this matter, and extra hygiene precautions were already in place since the first international outbreak of coronavirus in January,” he told The Courier Mail.

He said this included regularly wiping and disinfecting door handles, lift buttons, handrails and bathrooms, and extra hand sanitisers were placed around the venue.
