Megastar is spotted awaiting election of new Pope

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted a world-famous superstar in Rome awaiting the election of the new Pope.

People gathered in Rome on Thursday caught Harry Styles awaiting the election of the new pope.

A fan snapped a quick photo captioning it, “While I was watching the Pope’s announcement in St. Peter’s Square, Harry Styles passed by me and our eyes met, I immediately photographed this memory. What a day!”

The 31-year-old three-time Grammy-winning artist was seen in the crowd as Pope Leo XIV delivered his first public remarks as head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The former One Direction star kept a low-profile as he wore a grey cap featuring the words, “Techno is my boyfriend” along with black sunglasses.

The UK native has been in Italy and Germany recently, where he’s reportedly recording new music.

Styles has been notably absent on social media after the death of his former bandmate Liam Payne just over six months ago.

In a touching tribute, he revealed he was “deeply devastated by Liam’s passing.”

“The years we spent together will remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always,” he said.

It’s not known whether the star was there to celebrate the election of the pope or if he just happened to be in the city.

Regardless, the English singer-songwriter was present to catch a glimpse of history as the first American pope was elected.

Fans were quick to jump on the new sighting with one user saying, “Harry styles is so random, one day he’s at the Grammys winning album of the year, then he’s running a marathon in Japan … but he could also be in Rome waiting for the announcement of the new pope, I love being his fan.”

“Can’t believe the new pope got a glimpse of Harry styles on his first day of the job,” joked another.

“He’s straight up just going on adventures at this point,” said a third.

The crowds were thick in Rome and the Vatican as the faithful and onlookers eagerly awaited the signal.

White smoke emerged from the roof of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican signifying that a new pope had been chosen at around 6pm on Thursday, local time (2am, Friday AEST).

“Habemus Papam (we have a pope)”, said Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberttim in Latin from the Vatican balcony as he announced Robert Prevost, 69, will lead the Catholic Church.

Speaking in Italian, Pope Leo’s first words were “peace be with you all”.

He thanked his predecessor Francis and said he wanted to “build bridges”. He did not speak in English.
