Fans worried for Squid Game star Jung Ho-yeon over new photos
Fans are concerned about a new series of photos posted by Jun Ho-yeon, the breakout star of Netflix hit Squid Game.
Fans have expressed their concerns for Korean actress Jung Ho-yeon, after the Squid Game star appeared drawn and thin in a new series of photos posted to her Instagram account.
It comes after the actress herself confessed she had lost “way too much weight” in the wake of the show’s success.
South Korean model and actress Ho-yeon, 27, was the breakout star of the wildly popular Netflix hit show, which broke streaming records when it debuted on the platform in September.
Within weeks of the show debuting, Ho-yeon, who played North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok, became the most-followed Korean actress on Instagram. She now has almost 24 million followers – some of whom were worried by her most recent post, showing the star posing in a variety of outfits.
“I loved you in Squid Game. I think you are an amazing actor and human. I don‘t want to come off negative at all, just want to say that seeing you in the black dress made me a bit worried,” wrote one fan.
“I‘m not sure if anyone noticed but she looks so tired,” said another.
“Plz take care of your health and nutrition … u r beautiful anyway,” wrote another.
Many more commenters urged the actress to “take care” of herself.
Others, however, defended the star, arguing her weight was nobody else’s business.
“Stop body shaming her and commenting on her body. Some people are saying, ‘good job for being so skinny!’ Some are saying, ‘eat something.’ Worry about yourself.”
The Straits Times reports that Ho-yeon’s official model profile states that she is 1.79m tall and weighs 49kg – and that she revealed in a recent interview she had shed another 4kg, explaining she “didn’t even have any time to eat” since moving to the US from Korea.
“So, I lost way too much weight. All the clothes that used to fit me when I first came to America are too loose now,” she said.
In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ho-yeon revealed that she lost 3kg in one week when Squid Game first became a global sensation.
“I couldn‘t eat – it wasn’t stress, I just didn’t know this feeling. I was kind of losing myself,” she said.
Squid Game was the star’s first-ever acting role – before that, she appeared on Korea’s Next Top Model back in 2013, coming second in the competition. Since the reality TV stint, she’s walked runways for Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Prabal Gurung, and was likened to models Hanne Gaby Odiele and Cara Delevingne by Vogue.
