Demi Lovato has revealed how she told her parents she was queer

Singer Demi Lovato has divulged how she came out to her parents as bisexual, and later pansexual.

Lovato said it took until her mid-twenties to be honest with her parents about her sexuality.

The singer revealed she put it off for so long because she came from a religious background.

“I came from a Christian background and grew up queer and didn’t tell people until I felt comfortable with it,” she explained.

“It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mum. At the time, I was bisexual, and then later realised I was pansexual.”

Bisexual refers to when you are attracted to both genders, while pansexual is when you’re attracted to people regardless of gender.

Despite Lovato’s concerns about coming out, she said both her parents were very understanding and supportive.

Lovato said her mum just started crying and said: “I just want you to be happy.”

Meanwhile, when she decided to tell her stepdad, it was a complete non-issue because he already assumed she was bisexual.

Lovato wasn’t exactly subtle when she released the banger ‘Cool for the Summer’ in 2015, which included the lyrics, “Got a taste for the cherry. I just need to take a bite”.

That banger was already playing on the radio everywhere when she made the announcement to her stepdad.

“I was like, ‘I like girls too.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, I know you have ‘Cool for the Summer’ out.”

Lovato said she realises not everyone has such supportive parents, explaining the reason she’s so open about her sexuality on social media is to create a “safe space” for fans.

“That’s why I post on social media all the time about being queer and what it means. Things that are in the public eye, what’s going on, current events, I post about it because it’s really important to me.”

Lovato has always been very open about her sexuality and her journey to becoming comfortable with herself.

In 2021 she confessed to Glamour that calling off her engagement tp actor Max Ehrich had ended up being a really good thing.

“When I started getting older, I started realising how queer I really am,” she said.

“This past year I was engaged to a man, and when it didn’t work, I was like, ‘this is a huge sign’.”

Lovato said ending the engagement filled her with a sense of “relief” and meant that she could live her “truth.
