Robert De Niro’s grandson Leandro De Niro Rodriguez’s cause of death revealed
The official cause of death has been revealed for the 19-year-old grandson of Goodfellas star Robert De Niro, just weeks after his passing.
Robert De Niro’s grandson Leandro De Niro Rodriguez’s cause of death has been revealed.
The 19-year-old died from a “toxic” combination of illicit drugs, the New York City Medical Examiner told Page Six on Tuesday.
According to the autopsy results, Leandro had fentanyl, bromazolam, alprazolam, 7-aminoclonazepam, ketamine and cocaine in his system at the time of his death, which was ruled an “accident.”
The woman who was arrested in connection to the late teen’s overdose allegedly warned him about the fentanyl-laced pills she’s believed to have sold him.
According to the criminal complaint obtained last month by Page Six, police discovered texts between Sophia Marks, 20, and Leandro regarding the purchase of counterfeit oxycodone and Xanax just days before his death.
Police believe Marks allegedly sold pills to children as young as 15.
On July 2, Drena De Niro made the heartbreaking announcement that her son — whom she shared with graffiti artist Carlos Rodriguez (aka Mare139) — had died.
“You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life,” she wrote in an Instagram tribute at the time.
“I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you. I don’t know how to live without you.”
The Daredevil Films founder lamented that she wished her “love alone could have saved” her only child.
“I’m so sorry my baby,” she continued. “Rest in Peace and Eternal Paradise my darling boy.”
Drena also seemed pretty certain she knew what killed her son.
“Someone sold him fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him,” she previously claimed on Instagram in response to an inquiring commenter.
“For all these people still f**king around selling and buying this s**t, my son is gone forever.”
Following Drena’s announcement, Carlos shared a photo of a black square on his account — and left the caption blank.
Robert, for his part, issued a statement reacting to the tragic news.
“I’m deeply distressed by the passing of my beloved grandson Leo,” the actor, 79, told Page Six in a statement via his rep.
“We’re greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo.”
Leandro was laid to rest on July 8.
Both Drena and her late son lived in Manhattan and celebrated Mother’s Day together.
“Today was a good day,” she captioned an Instagram post during the May holiday.
Drena, 51, is the eldest of the Goodfellas star’s seven children. He adopted her in 1976 when he married her mother, Diahnne Abbott. Drena took her then-stepdad’s surname at the time.
Robert and Abbott, 78, called it quits in 1988, more than a decade after they welcomed son Raphael, now 46.
The Oscar winner is also the father of 27-year-old twins Aaron and Julian, whom he shares with Toukie Smith, as well as Elliot, 26, and Helen, 11, whom he shares with his second wife, Grace Hightower.
Robert and his girlfriend, Tiffany Chen, welcomed a baby girl named Gia in April.
