SINGER R. Kelly’s 14-year-old child has come out as transgender and revealed his dad has not spoken to him since the revelation.
The teenager was born a female named Jaya but has changed his name to Jay, explaining on his Ask.fm profile that he has identified as a make since he was six or seven.
He said his mum, Andrea Kelly, has been supportive of his announcement.
“My mum was like, “Baby, you know I love you if you were bi, gay, lesbian, you name it and I would still love you so much”,’ he wrote. “She was very proud of me, I was like, “Thank you mum for accepting the fact that I’m a transgender”.’
“And same with my sister (Joann), she told me that she was proud of me, and respects me by calling me handsome and calling me her little brother now, and I love her for that, so you know it was great for me,” he wrote.
However his father R. Kelly has not been as supportive.
“Yea my dad has not reached out,” he said.
Jay however did admit that he and his sister have never been close to their father despite the fact that their older brother is. R. Kelly and Andrea divorced in 2009.
Jay says he is eager to have reassignment surgery but knows he has to wait a number of years for that to happen.
“I believe I am a boy and want surgery, and the medication to help me (be) who I was supposed to be,” he wrote. “I would look up like boy changes to girl, and girl changes to boy, and im like wow, theres people who feel EXACTLY the way I feel and then I knew like that's what transgender is.”
