Drew Barrymore has reunited with her emancipated mum Jaid Barrymore for Mother’s Day
DREW Barrymore famously became emancipated from her parents at the age of 14 but, despite her troubled upbringing, she seems to have reunited with her mum.
LONG before Disney stars were heading to rehab and the Kardashians were getting slammed for their ridiculous red carpet outfits, Drew Barrymore’s tumultuous upbringing was all anyone could talk about.
After acting in her first commercial before she even turned one, Barrymore rose to global stardom for her role in ET in 1982. By 13 she was put in rehab by her mother after becoming a drug and alcohol addict.
But, it was that exact tumultuous upbringing that led to Barrymore emancipating herself from her parents when she turned 14 who, she has since said, were the reason why she was so far off the rails, even as young as seven.
Barrymore was born into one of the world’s most famous acting families.
Her father John Barrymore, an acting great, married Drew’s mother Jaid in 1971 however the pair divorced in 1984, when Drew was nine-years-old.
Since the death of her father in 2004, the ice began to thaw between the mother and daughter and, it seems like Mother’s Day has finally united the pair.
Taking to Instagram, the actress posted a photo of her and her mother, captioning the photo “Proud. Me and my mom. One Mother’s Day!”
Barrymore hasn’t held back when speaking about her mother in the past, telling More Magazine in 2015 she “didn’t really have parents” growing up.
She’s also called her relationship with her mum “so complicated”, telling Marie Clarein 2014 “I’ve always been empathetic toward my mum, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversation about it”.
“However, it hasn’t enabled me to lessen the distance. It’s the hardest subject in my life. I’ve never just been angry with her. I’ve always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can’t really be in each other’s lives at this point,” she added.
Barrymore’s mum also committed Drew to a mental institution for a year and a half after drug and alcohol abuse and suicide attempts.
“It was horrible and dark and very long-lived, a year and a half, but I needed it. I needed that whole insane discipline. My life was not normal. I was not a kid in school with normal circumstances. There was something very abnormal, and I needed some severe shift,” she told The Guardian in 2015.
But, it was while she was in the institution that doctors suggested she emancipate herself, and, as soon as she left, that’s exactly what she did.
The Never Been Kissed actress has since had two of her own daughters with her ex-husband Will Kopelman.
The couple divorced in 2016 but still co-parent their daughters Olive, four, and Frankie, three.
And, Barrymore isn’t the only celebrity burying the hatchet.
Angelina Jolie also appears to have reunited with her estranged father and fellow actor Jon Voight after the pair were photographed out for dinner this week with four of Jolie’s children.
Since that, Voight has continued to sing the praises of his daughter.
“Give my daughter all the love in the world because she’s a wonderful mum to her kids,” Voight told TMZ when asked if he wanted to wish her anything for Mother’s Day.
Jolie has had a lifelong dysfunctional relationship with her father, ever since Voight left the family before she was one-year-old.
After Jolie legally removed Voight from her name in 2002, her father made an appearance on Access Hollywood, telling the program she had “serious mental problems”.
After his comments, the pair did not speak for close to seven years but began to rebuild their relationship after Jolie’s mother and Voight’s first wife Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian cancer in 2007.
