Mick Jagger, Mariah Carey and Angela Bassett lead tributes for iconic singer Tina Turner
The entertainment world is mourning the death of the beloved superstar, sharing their messages and condolences for the singer on social media.
The entertainment world is mourning the death of beloved superstar Tina Turner, who died today aged 83.
The legendary musician has been hailed an icon by both her fans and famous friends, who paid their respects on social media after news broke of her passing.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” a statement posted to Turner’s Instagram account read.
“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
Social media was buzzing with messages and condolences soon after the announcement, with Angela Bassett – who played Turner in the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It? – leading the way with her heartfelt tribute.
“How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world?” Bassett began in her Instagram post. “Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like.”
“Her final words to me – for me – were ‘You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.’”
Bassett said she would hold “hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days” and she was “honored to have known Tina Turner”.
The likes of Mick Jagger, Mariah Carey and Madonna were not far off with their tributes.
“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner,” he tweeted. “She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her.”
Jagger’s Rolling Stones bandmate Ronnie Wood also expressed his sorrow on Twitter.
“God bless you Tina, the Queen Of Rock And Soul and a dear friend to our family,” Wood tweeted. “Love and prayers to all of Tina’s family, friends and loved ones.”

Mariah Carey shared a beautiful tribute on Twitter in remembrance of her idol “queen”.
“The words legendary, iconic, diva, and superstar are often overused and yet Tina Turner embodies them all and so many more – an incredible performer, musician and trailblazer,” she tweeted.
“To me, she will always be a survivor and an inspiration to women everywhere. Her music will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in Peace, Queen.”

Madonna is also devastated over the news
“Thank you Tina Tutner [sic]. You paved the way for so many women,” she wrote on Instagram Stories alongside a playfully photo shoot they did in the past.
Rod Stewart was equally heartbroken as he remembered his good friends.
“I’m devastated, what a women! A friend and mentor – ‘It takes two’ – but there was only one Tina Turner,” he wrote on Instagram.
Fellow musician Alicia Keys thanked Turner not just for her music, but for her strength.
“What a woman, what a life, what a warrior!!!” she began her lengthy post on Instagram.
“The day I met you Ms Tina, I couldn’t believe I was standing in the presence of your greatness!! (Thanks to my big sis @oprah!!!) I got to celebrate and thank you for all the love you’ve poured out around u. The songs you sang gave us courage to step out and be our full selves. You are a fierce force as a woman and a performer! All of these things have been beacons of light for not only me, but all the people around the world finding ourselves and our fearlessness, through our vulnerability!!”

Speaking of Winfrey, the TV and media personality also paid tribute by a recalling a special moment she graced the stage with Turner in 1997.
“I had the chance to join Tina onstage during her Wildest Dreams tour and felt a glimpse of her enchanted world,” Winfrey captioned a video of their jam session on Instagram.
“I was so nervous that my knees were actually knocking together. Dancing onstage with her in Los Angeles was the most fun I ever remember having stepping out of my box. Tina lived out of the box and encouraged me and every woman to do the same.”
Diana Ross sent her love to Turner’s family.
“Shocked. Saddened. Sending condolences to Tina Turner’s family and loved ones,” the singer tweeted.
Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart also shared a sweet moment with Turner she’ll never forget.
“We loved Tina Turner. Goddess, Performer, Wonder Woman ! We will miss her so much!!!!!!!!!” Stewart wrote on Instagram, alongside a fun photo of them at a sleepover.
