Maggie Tabberer’s life will be celebrated at a public memorial
Australia’s first supermodel Maggie Tabberer’s life will be honoured in a public memorial to be held next month.
Fashion icon and two-time Gold Logie winner Maggie Tabberer will be celebrated at a public memorial in Sydney on February 10.
Tabberer, who died on December 6, will be remembered at a one-hour tribute at Randwick Ritz Cinema from 11am.
Tabberer’s daughters Brooke and Amanda posted a public invitation to social media on Wednesday.
“We are delighted to invite you all to attend a memorial celebrating the life of our darling mother and grandmother,” the post stated.
While there is no stated dress code, attendees are invited to “wear something you think Maggie would like to see you in.”
The request is expected to produce a veritable black-and-white chequerboard of fashion, Tabberer’s preferred achromatic shades, and a parade of berets and turbans mirroring Tabberer’s own elegant and imposing style.
After retreating gracefully from the public eye in her final years, the legendary model, fashion PR maverick and television personality died after a years-long battle with diabetes in December. She was 87.
Tabberer’s family has opted for a public memorial rather than a state funeral with sources saying Tabberer wasn’t one to stand on ceremony and an “off Broadway” memorial is more in keeping with Tabberer’s rebellious and fun-loving personality.
This follows the precedent set by her close friends Harry M Miller, Tabberer’s longtime manager, and entertainer and television star Stuart Wagstaff.
Miller was farewelled in 2018 with a variety show style tribute at the Sydney’s Capitol Theatre Theatre Royal while Wagstaff was celebrated in 2015 with an affectionate event at the Theatre Royal.
Tabberer took to the stage at both memorials to recall long associations with the men.
In 2015 she remembered “Waggers” as her “soulmate” and lifelong confidant who she met 50 years when he joined Channel 7’s production of Beauty and the Beast, in which she starred.
Tabberer’s daughters, along with family friend and former Grace Bros model Deborah Hutton, are expected to speak at the February 10 memorial.
