Fan favourite Gogglebox Australia star Di Kershaw dies

Sad news for fans of Gogglebox Australia today, with the death of one of the show’s best-loved personalities over the weekend.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford broke the news on-air on 3AW this morning that Di Kershaw – one-half of the couple Mick and Di, who’ve been on the show since season one – had died at the age of 76 after a short battle with throat cancer.

“She’s been sick sadly for a couple of months now, so condolences to Mick and the entire family. She was great talent – the producers struck gold when they found her,” Ford said.

Di and husband Mick, Indigenous art dealers who lived in Sydney and had been married for more than 50 years, had appeared in every season of Gogglebox Australia.

Airing since 2015 as a Foxtel and Ten co-production, the show gives viewers a peek into everyday Australian households as they watch and commentate on the week’s biggest and most divisive TV moments. Fond of a white wine and never afraid to give her opinion, Di was undoubtedly one of the show’s best-loved personalities.

Her sharp tongue once even extended to her former Gogglebox castmate, Angie Kent, who she watched appear on various other reality programs after leaving the show.

“She was on Gogglebox, then went to the jungle, then she became the Bachelorette , and now she’s a dancing star... Spare me. She’s no dancer, that’s for sure,” Di quipped.

A joint statement from FOXTEL, Network 10, and Endemol Shine Australia, confirmed the news today:

“We are unbelievably saddened to hear of the passing of Di Kershaw.

For the past eight years we were privileged to have her luminescent character make us chuckle with her sardonic wit, crackling laugh and her impeccable style on Gogglebox.

From everyone at FOXTEL, Network 10, and Endemol Shine Australia we extend our condolences and love to husband Mick and the rest of the family. Thank you for letting us share the warmth, humour and heart of your wife, mother, and grandmother.

Di would always sign off correspondence with ‘Pleasure Treasure’, but the pleasure was all ours and we will treasure it forever.”

Kershaw’s achievements extended far beyond Gogglebox - in 2020 she received an Order of Australia in 2020 for her longstanding service to the visual arts.

She and husband Mick briefly disappeared from Gogglebox during the show’s 11th season back in 2020, opting to self-isolate from Covid inside their Sydney home.

“This is a very, very crazy world that we live in and actually I did suggest we should have a new TV show called Survivor: In The Home,” Di said, announcing their departure to fans of the show. The couple were back on board by the following season.

The pair’s Gogglebox bio gave fans a little more insight into their history together:

“Di, a former model, convinced Mick to give up his high-flying career as an advertising executive in order to follow their passion for art. They opened their own art gallery and dealership and 30-years later, the business is still going strong,” it read.
