Aaron Carter’s vow to get custody of son in heartbreaking interview before death

Rapper and former child star Aaron Carter’s heartbreaking final interview before he died aged 34 revealed one vow he failed to achieve.

Tributes flow in for Aaron Carter

Aaron Carter vowed to get custody of his baby son in one of his last interviews before his tragic death at age 34 on November 5.

The rapper and former child star welcomed 11-month-old Prince with his fiance Melanie Martin.

Carter lost custody of his son and checked into rehab in an effort to bring his one-year-old back home, The US Sun exclusively reported in September.

He claimed that he had begun a month-long outpatient program with Los Angeles-based Lionrock Recovery to do so.

He exclusively said in a video with bartender Melanie Martin, 30: “I haven’t had any relapses or anything like that, it’s just triggers are big right now for me [and] I want my son back.

“The main reason why I enrolled into Lionrock Recovery outpatient is to help with the weed.”

He continued on the program with hope, while wearing a hat and appearing alongside Martin:

“It’s an abstinence program and I work with an individual counsellor,” adding that it was a suggestion from the court but not mandatory.

“I do group therapy, parenting classes, domestic violence classes, I got myself certified in CPR, just a lot of different things.

“It’s new being a parent but it’s actually become really fun and exciting and given me a new chapter of my life. It’s been amazing.”

Custody war

The beloved singer said he was seeking professional help to prevent falling off the wagon after five years of sobriety.

Carter said the treatment was to also stabilise his turbulent relationship with Martin that often played out in public.

The tattooed artist, who survived more than 100 seizures from a “dusting” addiction, spent $200,000 on care to make the couple a “fully functional family.”

Martin’s mother had custody of the couple’s son under a court order, Carter claimed, amid worrying drug and domestic violence claims.

In the interview, he shut down claims of being addicted to Xanax which he was prescribed to, or being an excessive alcohol drinker.

Various videos on social media had concerned fans as he seemed “out of it” when he posted.

“I’ll be working on a project or something, there [have] been lots of different things, I think a lot of it is just kind of over-exaggerated. I do take Xanax,” he said.

“Xanax is a part of my regimented medication that I take from Aloe House that was prescribed to me in rehab, so I take a regimented medication, a series of medications which helps keep me clean from huffing dust.”

‘I would never do that’

The talented star tried to wean himself off Xanax, but “went into a very dark, depressed state and didn’t function normally,” he also claimed to The US Sun.

“Some people need medications to function normally after they have f****ed up their brain huffing duster cans,” he said.

Carter continued to assert that he had never attempted to be oversubscribed on medication as his prescriptions.

“I go through everything above board. Nothing ever off the streets, ever. I would never do that,” he insisted.

“I lost my sister to an accidental drug overdose so I would never do that. I would never overtake my medication.”

‘Thank you lord’

Aaron first went public with his former relationship in January 2020 when he shared a picture of the couple on Instagram.

The couple then got engaged in June to show their commitment to each other.

Carter and Martin welcomed their first child together in November 2021 and broke up days later.

The I Want Candy Singer took to Instagram to share the exciting news about his son. “Emergency C Section after 13 hours of labour but my fiancee is in great health. Thank you lord and the incredibly sweet loving staff here,” he wrote.

“Prince is precious, I love you son. Your mommy loves you as I drop tears on the phone. This is me cutting his umbilical cord my precious family.”

Adding: “@missmelaniemartin, I’m so proud of you hunny. You did it. I Love you with all my heart. My beautiful blessings from god.”

Tumultuous relationship

Melanie Martin posted a two-second clip of herself hysterically crying on TikTok on Saturday while driving.

The pair had a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship over the years and had various domestic disputes – Martin was arrested for felony domestic violence at one point.

One day after the arrest, Carter claimed he was “single” and posted a nude bathroom selfie on Instagram.

Tragic death

Carter was tragically found deceased on Saturday at his house in Lancaster, California.

A male body was found “unresponsive in the bathtub.”

“Lancaster station deputies responded to the 42500 block of Valley Vista Drive in the city of Lancaster regarding a rescue responding call.

“The informant in the call, the house sitter, stated she found the male.

“She was advised by the dispatcher to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to the deputies’ arrival.

“Shortly after the deputies arrived, Fire department personnel arrived and pronounced the male deceased at the scene.”

“Identity is not being confirmed at this time pending next of kin notifications.

“There is no additional information being released at this time.”

Sources have not revealed the cause of death.

A family statement read: “The family has been notified and will be flying out to Los Angeles. Aaron worked very hard towards the end of his life in recovery, to be a good father and to make amends with his family.”

Family woes

Aaron Carter was the younger brother of Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter.

He also has two sisters, one of which is his twin, Angel. Aaron’s other sister, Leslie Carter, died in 2012 at the age of 25 due to a prescription drug overdose.

Three prescription bottles found near her body were Xanax, Olanzapine, used to treat schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, and the muscle relaxant Cyclobenzaprine.

He claimed to The Sun it was Leslie who first introduced him to huffing, or inhaling drugs through the nose.

Hailing from Tampa, Florida, Aaron debuted in the late 1990s as a pop singer-turned-sensation.

During his teens, Aaron opened shows for the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. He signed his first record deal aged nine.
