KATHERINE Heigl has revealed she ended up in therapy after her falling out with Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes which saw her branded ‘difficult’.
Heigl, 37, won an Supporting Actress Emmy in 2007 for her role as Dr Izzie Stevens on the hit show. However a year later she withdraw her name from consideration saying “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination.”
Now, Heigl has told Howard Stern that she knew almost instantly that she had said the wrong thing.
“I went in to Shonda (Rhimes) and said, ‘I’m so sorry. That wasn’t cool, and I should not have said that,” she told Stern. “And I shouldn’t have said anything publicly. I went in because I was really embarrassed.”
She left Grey’s in 2010 amid reports that she was “difficult to work with” and had put both Rhimes and her co-stars off-side.
Heigl says that feeling left her seeking professional help from a therapist.
“I was not handling it well. I was feeling completely like the biggest piece of s**t on the bottom of your shoe,” she said. “I was really struggling with it and how to not take it all personally and not to feel that there’s something really deeply wrong with me.”
Heigl also spoke out against the 2007 movie Knocked Up, the Seth Rogen comedy hit that was predicted to kickstart her movie career.
She said she found the film “a little sexist.”
“It paints the women as shrews, as humourless and uptight, and it paints the men as loveable, goofy, fun-loving guys. I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a b***h; why is she being such a killjoy?” she said.
Heigl told Stern that she also regretted speaking out against the movie.
“That was dumb,” she said.
Heigl used to be able to command $12 million a movie but a string of flops, including a failed foray back into TV with the drama State of Affairs, which was axed after one season.
She is currently filming Unforgettable alongside Rosario Dawson.
