Brooke Satchwell blown away by popularity of Foxtel show Mr Inbetween

She’s been on Australian TV for years, but it’s only recently Brooke Satchwell noticed her fan base grew thanks to her latest hit series.

Veteran Australian actor Brooke Satchwell has been a fixture on our most beloved Aussie TV soaps for the better part of two decades.

She played Anne Wilkinson on Neighbours in the ’90s, where she won a Logie for Most Popular New Talent, before joining Water Rats, Packed to the Rafters and Wonderland.

But it’s only in the last year, since the premiere of Foxtel and FX production Mr Inbetween, that she’s realised she’s getting recognised a lot more.

Satchwell, 38, told news.com.au she was getting her teeth checked at the dentist when the person peering inside her mouth recognised her as her character, paramedic Ally.

“That’s what I have found really brilliant is that the show is so deep in the Aussie vernacular but it still resonated with international audiences. It’s a testament to the fact that if you tell an authentic story, that’s the key,” she said.

“I found myself at the dentist with a mouth full of metal being told how much they love the show, and it really makes me very happy. The cross-section of audience has been extraordinary, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

Satchwell also said season two was “darker” but still “invariably funny”.

“We’ll get to know Ray a little more and in reflection Ally as well,” she added.

Mr Inbetween was renewed for a second season in October last year only weeks after its series one premiere, thanks to solid ratings and international praise.

It has been picked up in the US by the FX network.

Inspired by the 2005 feature film The Magician, which was created and written by Scott Ryan, who also starred in the film and returned to lead the series, Mr Inbetween follows the story of criminal-for-hire Ray Shoesmith.

Ray’s work and personal life begin to collide in the second season and he finds himself struggling to keep both sides of his life from imploding.

Series two, which will have 10 episodes, was recently shot in Sydney and is produced by FX in association with Blue-Tongue Films, Jungle Entertainment and Pariah Productions.

It’s directed by Nash Edgerton, the brother of blockbuster actor Joel Edgerton.

“The response to season one was super positive both here and in the US, with everyone wanting more,” Edgerton said.

“We are very excited to share more episodes, allowing us to explore Ray’s character further and delve deeper into Ray’s adventures in crime, dating and parenting.”

The first season has garnered positive reviews both critically and commercially, currently maintaining an 88 per cent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mr Inbetween premieres Friday, September 13 at 2pm with an encore at 8pm on FOX SHOWCASE and is available to stream On Demand
