Britney Spears’ dad Jamie Spears agrees to step down as conservator

Britney Spears’ father Jamie has officially agreed to step down as the pop star’s conservator after a 13 year ordeal, it has been confirmed.

Britney Spears’ father agrees to step down as conservator

Jamie Spears has finally agreed to step down as Britney Spears’ conservator.

The US pop star’s father – who has been her conservator for more than 13 years – has reportedly filed legal documents via his lawyer to the Los Angeles Superior Court agreeing to relinquish control of Britney’s estate, according to TMZ.

Despite the major about-face, Jamie said he believes stepping away is not in his daughter’s best interests.

“There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate … and it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears’ best interests,” the court documents read, according to TMZ.

“Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.

“So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter’s new lawyer to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.

“Regardless of his formal title, Mr. Spears will always be Ms. Spears’ father, he will always love her unconditionally, and he will always look out for her best interests.”

It is understood Jamie isn’t stepping aside immediately and will instead wait for the process to drag out in court for a new conservator to be appointed.

Britney’s new lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, told the publication he was “pleased” with Jamie’s decision but disappointed he isn’t stepping aside immediately.

“We are pleased but not necessarily surprised that Mr. Spears and his lawyer finally recognise that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” Rosengart told TMZ.

“We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears’s sworn deposition in the near future.

“In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr. Spears should step aside immediately.”

It comes after months of negotiations in court to have Jamie removed as Britney’s conservator.

The singer herself pleaded for her father to be removed as her conservator as she broke her years-long silence in a 20-minute address to the court on June 24.

“He loved the control he had over me, one hundred thousand per cent,” Britney, 39, said at the time in an emotional statement.

“I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m OK and happy. I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised. I can’t sleep, I’m depressed, I cry every day.

“But now I’m telling you the truth, I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane … I cry everyday.”

Spears said she wanted the conservatorship arrangement to end “without having to be evaluated.”

“I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive,” she said. “It’s my wish and my dream for this to end.”

Earlier this week a judge sided with Jamie after denying Britney’s lawyer’s plea to have him immediately removed as her conservator.

According to LA court documents, judge Brenda Penny denied Britney’s new lawyer Mathew Rosengart’s request “without prejudice” to immediately lift the conservatorship.

Judge Penny also denied Mr Rosengart’s request to move forward the planned September 29 hearing to this month.

Britney’s legal team had requested Jamie’s immediate removal, claiming the more time Jamie serves as the US pop star’s conservator was “avoidable harm.”

“Ms. Spears’s emotional health and wellbeing must be, and are, the paramount concern,” Britney’s defence claimed.

“Further, all interested parties forcefully agree that Mr. Spears’s continued presence as Conservator of the Estate is contrary to Ms. Spears’s best interests, health, and wellbeing, and that his prompt removal — or, at the very least, his immediate suspension — is ‘critical’ at this juncture.”

After the plea was denied, Britney took to Instagram to declare she felt “completely hopeless” and that she would post less on social media for the time being.

She also posted a video of a fan flying a “#FreeBritney” flag, saying “one day I will love on the edge !!!! One day …”

Britney is yet to directly address her father’s latest decision however she did post a video of herself dancing on Instagram writing, “Letting go is freedom”.

It is a major win for Britney, who has been under the court-ordered arrangement since 2008 when she suffered an infamous public breakdown.

Over the years Spears’ conservatorship has come under question as the singer has continued to perform, including as part of her lucrative Las Vegas residency in which she’s earned millions of dollars.
