Little Britain star Matt Lucas is speaking out after Millie Bobby Brown called him out for comments he made about her “mommy makeover”.
The British comedian, 50, took to Instagram to set the record straight after the Stranger Things star put him on blast for commenting about her recent public appearances.
Lucas was among several people that Brown singled out in a video message condemning the media and the public for “bullying” her with claims she is “ageing so badly.”
“This isn’t journalism. This is bullying,” the 21-year-old actress said in a video shared to her Instagram yesterday. “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it’s disturbing.”
“I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me,” she continued. “Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things season one. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”
Today, Lucas issued an apology to the young actor while also wanting to “provide some context” for his remarks.
“Dear Millie,” he wrote in a statement shared to his Instagram. “I just saw your post and wanted to respond and provide some context.”
He explained that the “mommy makeover” comment was a reference to a teenage girl character he played in skits on his comedy show Little Britain, a hit TV series that ran from 2003 to 2006.
“Nearly 25 years ago, I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain,” he wrote. “There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo you had blonde hair and were wearing a pink top so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases.”
Lucas said he thought Brown “looked terrific” in photos he shared of her wearing a similar pink tracksuit, but admitted to being “mortified” when he discovered tabloids had written that he “slammed” her with the post.
“Firstly, because that’s not my style, and secondly because I think you’re brilliant,” he continued. “I would not have posted it if I thought it would have upset you, but I realise it has and for that I apologise.”
Not that his apology would make an impact on Brown, who vowed to never dim her sparkle for her haters.
“I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can’t handle seeing a girl become a woman,” she concluded in her video.
“I will not be shamed for how I look, how I dress, or how I present myself.”
