Betty White, of The Golden Girls fame, killed off on the internet after fans confuse ‘dye’ for ‘die’

ACTRESS Betty White has been sent to her death prematurely. And you can blame illiterate social media users for it.

ACTRESS Betty White has been sent to her death prematurely. And you can blame illiterate social media users for it.

The satirical website Empire News posted an article online yesterday titled: “Actress Betty White, 92, dyes peacefully in her Los Angeles home”.

That sent fans of The Golden Girls star in a frenzy, sparking rumours and RIPs on social media.

The story, which supposedly quoted the actress’ agent, was in fact a cheeky piece about White not being a natural blonde.

But readers confused the word ‘dye’ with ‘die’ in the headline and failed to detect that the article was just for fun.

White’s agent, Jeff Witjas, assured the Los Angeles Times that the much-loved actress was alive and well.

“She is on the set shooting Hot in Cleveland right now,” he said.

Isn’t she lovely ... at 92, Betty White is still as popular as ever.

White’s fans were relieved but not impressed by the confusion. See their reaction on Twitter below.

White is among several high-profile celebrities killed off by the internet because of confusion in the past two months.

When news of Richard Attenborough’s death was announced last month, the Twittersphere rushed to pay their respects. But there was a problem: they thought it was his brother David that died.

Similarly, the death of funnyman Robin Williams last month prompted a flood of tributes for British popstar Robbie Williams.
