Singer Katy Perry has faced a backlash from fans on Twitter after posting about reconciling with family members who voted for Donald Trump in the US election.
“The first thing I did when the presidency was called is text and call my family members who do not agree and tell them I love them and am here for them. #FamilyFirst. Call your family today. Happy Sunday,” she wrote, concluding with a love-heart emoji.
Twitter users didn’t hold back in their replies, calling Perry out for her ‘white privilege’ and for being ‘tone-deaf’.

No. People were lynched because the murderers knew they would get a free pass under Trump even if they got caught. What is so hard to understand? https://t.co/DuJdAV544S

No. Stop telling marginalized people that they owe kindness to the people who actively voted for their oppression. Idgaf if theyre family. Cause as family they shouldn't have voted against their rights in the first place. You can keep that kumbaya bullshit. #HumanityFirst https://t.co/0MFFXzKicv

It’s not the first time Perry has been criticised for her election commentary.
In late October, she and husband Orlando Bloom raised eyebrows for their ‘strange’ made-up voting song they posted on Instagram before the election.
The star couple filmed themselves over their morning coffee, breaking into song to encourage followers to vote.
“Rise and shine and get to the polls now,” sang Perry, 36, wearing a “Daisy Dove” necklace in honour of their daughter, born August 27th.
“Vote in person, not with a mail-in ballot,” added the topless Pirates of the Caribbean star, 43, stumbling over his words slightly.
“Now’s the time to vote in person, person, people of the United States,” finished Perry in the video, available in full here.
“Mom & dad here reminding you that YOUR VOTE COUNTS!” the post was captioned.
Perry has previously spoken out in favour of the Biden-Harris ticket, sharing several photos of herself and now V ice President-elect Kamala Harrison Instagram in August.
“I’ve had the privilege of getting to know @kamalaharris over the years and @joebiden choosing her as his running mate is already a testament to his decision making: Kamala is exactly the kind of leader WITH experience we desperately need right now,” Perry wrote in the caption.
“She’s the type of person willing to put in the WORK to make our country better. Less than 3 months until Election Day. LET’S DO THIS YA’LL.”
Perry’s controversial tweet comes after president-elect Joe Biden won the US election, which has prompted celebration among many other celebrities.
