SERVING shots while wearing hotpants and posing as a girl’s boyfriend to make her ex jealous - welcome to the life of an Aussie actor in LA.

Sure Rebel Wilson, Margot Robbie, Rose Byrne and anyone with the surname Hemsworth make it look like it’s easy to break into Hollywood.

And while la la land has a much-publicised love affair with Australian talent, it’s not all about Oscar nominations and shooting kissing scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio.

LA-based Aussie actor and comedian Ash Williams has served vodka shots while wearing gold hot pants at a West Hollywood gay bar and dressed up as a “noble lord” at a university campus, then had to jump out of a bush in full costume.

“I did a tickling video. I got paid $400 for that,” Williams said.

“I was wearing suit pants and two guys tickled me. It sounds much worse than it actually is.”

Williams moved to Los Angeles two and a half years ago to pursue stand-up comedy and acting after working as a radio presenter at Nova in Melbourne.

But before scoring guest roles in US sitcoms The Exes and Anger Management and performing regular stand-up at The Comedy Store and Hollywood Improv, Williams had to work less-than-glamorous jobs to pay the bills when he first moved to the City of Angels.

“I was doing vodka shots at a gay bar. I was walking around in hot pants. This was when times were really tough,” Williams said, sitting in a Hollywood bar.

“I got some really financially profitable options from lovely gentlemen but I never went down that path.

“People would just pay me $150 to pick them up from the airport. I’m up for anything, pretty much.”

Among his WTF jobs was posing as a stranger’s new boyfriend.

“Like this girl, I didn’t really know her, wanted to make her ex-boyfriend jealous so she paid me $150 to pretend to be her new boyfriend ... to make her ex jealous,” Williams said.

And there was that time he dressed up as a “noble lord”.

“I’ve dressed up ... and hid in these bushes at University of Southern California and [had to] jump out of the bushes and say, ‘I’m the noble lord and I choose you’. It was something to do with student housing for the university.

“They’re really strange jobs that just sound ridiculous when you say them.”

HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA:

So what has Williams learnt from working his way up in Hollywood? He’s shed the party boy lifestyle, for one.

“When I first moved over here ... reality went out the window,” Williams said.

“I just spent all of my money, I was wanting to have the best night every night, shouting everyone drinks. I spent a lot of my radio money - in fact, all of it.”

After seeing his Aussie mates land acting roles back home, Williams got serious about being in LA.

“If you’re out until 1am and you have an audition at 10am the next morning, you’re going to be rooted,” Williams said.

“Last year I was like f*** this, I’ve got to book some jobs. I was done. I was like, if I’m going to be here ... I’ve got to start booking (comedy and acting work).

“You’ve got to kind of turn up, show your face, hustle for the gigs.”

And he is hustling. Williams recently shot a two-week guest role in upcoming FX comedy series You’re The Worst playing Keith, a man-bun wearing hipster, alongside Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), to air in August.

While his eyebrow-raising CV has given him plenty of jokes for his stand-up routines, Williams said one of the toughest realities he learnt about pursuing acting and comedy in LA was to keep busy.

“For anyone who’s been here, there are only so many coffees you can have in one day.”

Williams is now working on a reality TV series based on his experiences being an Aussie in Los Angeles. At least he has a lot of material for that.
