Armie Hammer breaks silence on cannibalism accusations that derailed Hollywood career
Disgraced star Armie Hammer has opened up about the shocking scandal that effectively ended his career in Hollywood.
Actor Armie Hammer has opened up about the shocking scandal that effectively ended his career in Hollywood.
Speaking on his friend Tyler Ramsey’s Painful Lessons podcast, Hammer reflected on the cannibalism accusations surrounding him in 2021, that essentially cost him his livelihood and marriage.
At the time, Hammer was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, who claimed the actor sent them messages detailing his alleged cannibalistic fantasies and sexual fetishes.
The Social Network actor denied all the allegations, but in the wake of the scandal he was dropped by his agency, WME, and was fired from several movies, including Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez and the Godfather series The Offer.
“People called me a cannibal, and everyone believed them. They’re like, ‘Yep, that guy ate people,’” Hammer said in the episode.
“Like what? What are you talking about? Do you know what you have to do to be a cannibal? You have to eat people! How am I going to be a cannibal?! It was bizarre.”
Despite the damage the scandal made in his life, Hammer says he is “grateful” for everything he went through in the past three years.
“Even in the discrepancies, in whatever it was that people said, whatever it was that happened, I’m now at a place in my life where I’m grateful for every single bit of it,” he said.
“I’m actually now at a place where I’m really grateful for it because where I was in my life before all of that stuff happened to me, I didn’t feel good,” he continued. “I never felt satisfied. I never had enough. I never was in a place where I was happy with myself where I had self-esteem. I never knew how to give myself love. I never knew how to give myself self-validation but I had this job where I was able to get it from so many people that I never had to learn how to give it to myself.”
As it unfolded, Hammer’s actress wife Elizabeth Chambers filed for divorce from the Call Me By Your Name star after a decade together, citing “irreconcilable differences”.
When the scandal made headlines, the estranged couple moved to the Cayman Islands with their two young children but lived separately.
“Our divorce is almost final, but it’s not easy,” Chambers said while filming the TV seriesGrand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise in 2023. “The life that we had planned for years basically shattered. That was a really painful period of time.”
“A lot of the trauma that I have experienced in the last two years is behind me,” she added. “And now I think I’m very much at a place where I’m ready for a fresh start on the island.”
