“This is a very different place. It’s very much a holistic view of one’s place in the world,” he told the Telegraph.

“That is to say that you do address issues of addiction and patterns of behaviour but you do it in a way that is very much focused on being a useful member of family and community.”

Located on the NSW mid-north coast, O’Keefe will call the facility home for the next six to 12 months, after he was released on bail by the NSW Supreme Court in late May.

Within the camp, life is very regimented, and O’Keefe is required to make his bed daily, attend Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous meetings, follow a gruelling exercise plan, help with cleaning and other chores as well as participate in counselling sessions and blood and urine tests to prove sobriety.

O’Keefe’s stunning downfall

The 50-year-old had been in custody since he was arrested in January, then charged with assaulting and choking a woman at an apartment in Sydney’s CBD.

O’Keefe pleaded not guilty to six charges, including intentionally choking a person without consent, three counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In February, he pleaded guilty to a separate charge of drug possession.

Under the terms of his bail, O’Keefe must stay at the rehabilitation centre for at least six months, take any medication prescribed to him and see a psychiatrist and psychologist weekly.

Through his lawyers, O’Keefe has previously claimed that he was acting in self defence and the victim of an assault himself.

The complainant in his case has not been charged with any offence.

During a bail hearing the crown prosecutor told the court the woman and O’Keefe became known to each other when he purchased sex services from her and subsequently developed a friendship.

The court was told that O’Keefe claimed before the alleged assaults that the woman had owed him about $20,000 and was pressuring him to give her more money to further a flower business.

O’Keefe will also return to court for another hearing in June after he pleaded not guilty to breaching an apprehended violence order put in place to protect a different alleged victim who also cannot be identified for legal reasons.

The former TV star was dumped by Channel 7 after a 17-year partnership which saw him appear on a string of successful shows, including The Chase Australia, Weekend Sunrise, Deal or No Deal, The Rich List and other prime time specials including the Logie Awards.

He was awarded an Order of Australia for his work on television and in the charity space, including as a former ambassador for anti-domestic violence organisation White Ribbon.
