The late Prince was the king of shade.

According to letters unearthed and included in a new Prince memoir, the singer was not a fan of music by two pop stars, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran.

“We need to tell them that they keep trying to ram Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran down our throats, and we don’t like it no matter how many times they play it,” he once wrote, according to The Beautiful Ones, out this week.

The autobiography is co-written by Prince and superfan Dan Piepenbring, a 33-year-old writer hand-picked by Prince in 2016 to work with the legendary musical icon on his memoir, The Guardian reports. Piepenbring spent three months with the singer, attending parties and a private screening of Kung Fu Panda, before their time together was ended by Prince’s deadly fentanyl overdose in April.

While learning about Prince first-hand at his Paisley Park complex in Minnesota, Piepenbring realised how much material he had to work with.

“The sheer quantity of paper was surprising,” Piepenbring tells The Guardian. “There was no real method to the madness. In one room you’d find something from 1979, and within arm’s reach, there’d be something from 2002. There’d be these moments of intense intentionality — he’d gathered up all his handwritten lyrics from across his career, clipped them together and kept them in one place. Or he’d gathered artefacts pertaining to his father’s jazz band. It seemed very ad hoc and very personal.”

Piepenbring picked up on titbits about the secretive singer during the time spent with him, such as experiencing his great driving skills. The book, named after a song on the Purple Rain album, also includes accounts of Prince’s first kiss and his cartoon work, or Prince’s Funnies, as he called them.

Prince also dishes on his mother in the biography, recalling how when his family was pinching pennies, she allegedly borrowed money without permission — and never returned it.

“She would spend up what little $ the family had 4 survival on partying with her friends, then trespass in2 my bedroom, ‘borrow’ my personal $ that N’d gotten from babysitting local kids, & then chastise me 4 even questioning her regarding the broken promise she made 2 pay me back.”
