Will Smith spotted laughing at Chris Rock’s joke moments before slapping comedian in the face
A new angle captured moments before Will Smith’s Oscars slap only makes the ordeal all the more bizarre.
Eagle-eyed viewers have dug up a clip of Will Smith appearing to laugh at Chris Rock’s joke about his wife, moments before the Academy Award winner took to the stage to slap the host across the face.
Smith’s monumental dummy-spit shocked millions watching around the world, but the new revelation makes the scenario all the more bizarre.
Rock joked Pinkett Smith, who is bald from alopecia, would be starring in G.I Jane 2. At that point, one network’s camera honed in on Smith, who was initially seen laughing at the joke before clapping his hands together.
Jada, on the other hand, looked a little miffed.
It’s not clear if words were exchanged between husband and wife, but Smith then had an instant change of heart, springing to the stage to confront the comedian.
Smith didn’t mention the comedian by name throughout his Oscar acceptance speech, but vaguely alluded to their scuffle and apologised to everyone but Rock.
“I want to apologise to the Academy. I want to apologise to all of my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award,” he said. “It’s not about winning an award for me; it’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people.”
Viewers eager enough to follow celebrity feuds were quick to point out the comedian’s previous jabs at Pinkett Smith at the 2016 Oscars, when celebrities were making a fuss over the lack of diversity.
“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Rock said at the time.
It’s understood the pair are expected to work out their issues at the Vanity Fair party.
Both are expected to attend the annual Oscars bash, but it’s unclear if they’ll make amends before or during that soirée.
Smith was filmed living the high life shortly after, dancing and rapping to his own 90s hit song “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit’ It” with Oscar in hand at an exclusive Academy Awards after party.
The 53-year-old looked on top of the world as he was filmed letting loose on the dance floor at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.
When asked how he was doing at the Vanity Fair Oscar bash, Smith cryptically replied: “It’s all love”.
Smith was joined by his wife and children Willow, Jaden and Trey at the glitzy event - which was attended by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and the Williams sisters.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Rock has “declined to file a police report”, according to Variety.
“LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another,” a statement from the LAPD read.
“The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.”
