That wasn’t the first time Chris Rock joked about Will Smith’s wife

Chris Rock learned the hard way about slinging mud at a celebrity’s wife, but it was far from the first time he’s taken a crack at the Smiths.

Oscars 2022 Recap: Winners, shocks & highlights

If the Sopranos taught us anything, it was to never joke about another man’s wife, no matter the circumstances.

Chris Rock learned that the hard way in front of tens of millions of wide-eyed viewers when he made a joke at Jada Pinkett Smith’s expense.

His jab at Will Smith’s wife’s shaved head earned him a slap at this year’s Oscars ceremony, but it’s not the first time he’s sledged the famous family.

Viewers eager enough to follow celebrity feuds were quick to point out the comedian’s previous jabs at Pinkett Smith at the 2016 Oscars, when celebrities were making a fuss over the lack of diversity.

“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Rock said at the time.

He also took a swipe at Will Smith’s pay cheque that year.

“It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West!” he said.

Discussing the joke the following week, Pinkett Smith admitted jokes were just part of the business. The Oscars have a history of employing comedians to present awards to keep the ball rolling during the lengthy event.

“Hey look, it comes with the territory but we gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving. We gotta keep it moving,” she said at the time.

“There’s a lot of stuff we gotta handle, a lot of stuff in our world right now. We gotta keep it moving.”

Earlier on Monday at the Oscars, Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith, who is bald, appearing in a pretend remake of the 90s flick G.I Jane, which Demi Moore famously shaved her head for. Pinkett-Smith has spoken about her alopecia in the past.

“Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” Rock said, in seeming reference to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

The camera cut to Jada and husband Will Smith in the audience - and they didn’t look happy, at all.

Suddenly, Will stormed the stage to confront Rock - and smacked him right in the face. Thanks to high-fidelity microphones, the blow could be heard by viewers at home.
