Star’s perfect one-line Will Smith take-down

All it took was one withering sentence for actress Zoe Kravitz to let the world know exactly where she stands on the Will Smith scandal.

Zoë Kravitz has delivered a brutally succinct take-down on Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars on Monday.

The actress, 33, took to Instagram today to share a photo of herself posing on the red carpet with the caption: “Here’s a picture of my dress at the show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.”

Kravitz was in the audience at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre when Smith, 53, smacked Rock, 57, across the face for poking fun at his wife.

The Red Table Talk host, 50, who suffers from alopecia and shaved her head last summer, was the butt of Rock’s joke as he compared her to Demi Moore’s bald-headed character G.I. Jane.

Smith tried to laugh off the remark, but became incensed after he sensed Pinkett Smith’s annoyed reaction. The actor then stormed the stage to accost a confused and stunned Rock.

After returning to his seat, Smith repeatedly shouted at the comedian, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!”

The Academy released a statement the next day, condemning Smith’s behaviour and revealing that a “formal review” had been launched.

“We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law,” the statement read in part.

Hours later, Smith shared an apology via social media.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” the Best Actor winner wrote. “My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about my Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”

He added, “I would like to publicly apologise to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Smith is likely to be disciplined and may even have his Academy membership suspended, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, his award for Best Actor — his first Oscar won Sunday night for his role in King Richard — is less likely to be revoked.

Rock chose not to file police report against Smith for his onstage slap, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Meanwhile, Pinkett Smith has advocated for peace in the wake of her husband’s outburst.

“This is a season for healing and I’m here for it,” read a graphic that she posted on Instagram, two days after incident.

Kravitz’s scathing words came just hours after Jim Carrey slammed Smith during a US TV interview — and hit out at the “spineless” audience of A-listers who subsequently gave the actor a standing ovation.

“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation,” Carrey told US host Gayle King in a CBS Mornings interview that aired earlier today.

“Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” Carrey, 60, told King of the audience’s warm reception for Smith.

The Dumb and Dumber star then said Smith should have been arrested and sued over the act.

“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars because that video is going to be there forever, it’s going to be ubiquitous,” Carrey claimed.

“That insult is gonna last a very long time,” he continued. “If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter [that’s OK, but] you do not have the right to walk up onstage and smack somebody in the face ‘cuz they said words.”

King then suggested that the incident “escalated,” prompting Carrey to respond: “It didn’t escalate, it came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.”

Carrey and Smith have met on multiple occasions, with Carrey claiming he wishes no ill will toward the newly minted Oscar winner.

“I wish him the best, I really do … He’s done great things. But that was not a good moment. It cast a pall over everybody’s shining moment,” the Liar Liar star declared. “It was such a selfish moment that cast a pall over the whole thing.”

Shortly after the shocking incident played out onstage at the Oscars on Monday, a number of of Hollywood stars were quick to publicly condemn Smith’s act.

Director Judd Apatow claimed Smith “could have killed” Rock, while Kathy Griffin feared comedians could be targeted in copycat attacks.

“Seems like Will Smith’s plan to get comedians and the world to not make jokes about him is not going to pan out. The Williams family must be furious. Pure narcissism,” Apatow tweeted.

“He could have killed him. That’s pure out of control rage and violence. They’ve heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades. They are not freshmen in the world of Hollywood and comedy. He lost his mind.”

Kathy Griffin chimed in, claiming hecklers at comedy gigs could now be tempted to assault people on stage.

“It’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a comedian. Now we all have to worry about who want to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theatres.”
